Any reason why they’d shower this thing with more Oscar’s than any movies ever had before?

Do you really need people to spell it out?

Personally if I was a beneficiary of the participation trophy bias I'd feel insulted and patronized.

Production value and score are top notch.

I need to check out the score. I'm a big Ludwig Goransson fan. A lot of his score work is my background music while I'm working.

It's an elevated From Dusk Till Dawn that tries to make a larger cultural point and fails, but the people who took that bait used that to elevate it.

I think Get Out was overrated as shite, too, but it at least succeeded at its cultural analysis. This movie is getting Get Out praise on steroids.

I liked Sinners but it's definitely not worthy of 16 Oscar nominations. Is this going to be Sinners vs. One Battle After Another for every statue?

I liked Sinners a good bit. I enjoyed it much more than One Battle After Another.

16 nominations is a bit overboard but I'm ok with rewarding something at least attempting to be "different." I know the board (and myself) continues to demand variety in movies so I'm fine with something like this getting some nods.

It's worth a watch and it should make you feel less terrible for Josh Allen!

I liked it - 16 nominations is crazy, though
The end scene was awesome

I enjoyed Sinners, especially the ending and the vampire hillbilly musical trio.

I think the 16 noms are due to it doing everything at a high level, but the great parts not adding up to a perfect whole. I enjoyed One Battle much more.

The "dance scene" that everyone fricking RAVES about was one of the stupidest things I've ever seen. I hated that scene with a passion and everyone else absolutely goes gaga far it

The fact that this movie received 16 nominations tells you everything you need to know about the Oscars. It was OK but this is absurd.

There needs to be a more recognized body for the certifiable best films. History will begin to look back at this moment and say "ah.. Here's where the fall off happened."

I could hire a minority screenwriter and minority director, make a film about a trans-Asian AIDS patient and sweep every awards show imaginable. Bonus points if it's a musical and can be adapted for Broadway.

This .... it won't win much at all.

One Battle for best pic/director
Marty Supreme for design
One of the period pieces for costumes ... Frankenstein ?
I could see Marty for cinematography

that said ...

Coogler is a really great filmmaker, collaborator and person. So, I am happy for him and his success.

And for the local film community .... most of the people who built, lit, dressed the sets are La. residents.

Did you ever watch From Dusk Till Dawn? Did you like From Dusk Till Dawn?

If so then you’ll probably like Sinners.

This is correct. It's a modernized version of FDTD for sure.

At one point it leans a little too heavy into the "cultural music" aspect, but that's mainly for one extended scene and doesn't ruin anything. Also the gratuitous Klan scene at the end was ridiculous, but I get that that was the whole point of it, so I rolled with it.

The after/during credits scenes are top notch though, especially the one at the bar with old Sammie.

There has been a blatant push and campaign to make this movie some kind of a groundbreaking all-timer, and its just simply not. Not even remotely close IMO.

That said, it was a decent flick, and I enjoyed it well enough.

Man… they have got to be joking with this.

Sinner has one of the best first hours of a movie I’ve seen. Beautifully put together. Honest.

But it’s like the second half of the movie was produced by a 13 year old.

Watch the movie. You will probably like it on balance. But 16 Oscars nominations? lol.

I think I went in with high expectations where as I went into Sinners thinking it would be solid but nothing over the top.

I kept waiting for "One Battle" to grab me but it was just meandering along for me. I enjoyed it but I don't see myself ever watching it again.

I have always enjoyed reviewing movies 5 years later. I know they'll never give awards 5 years after but I think that helps with judgement being clouded by hype. It also lets the movie sit and we see where it sits in the culture zeitgeist.

Thought it was pretty decent as far as vampire movies are concerned. The twerking scene was laughable. One of the twins banging their mom was very uncomfortable.

Has Sinners officially passed Get Out and Black Panther as the best movie ever made? Definitely top three now. Coogler has to be in the discussion for best director ever now with Sinners and Black Panther. Jordan Peele is the clear number two.
