So Lumon is not so much a corporation as a religious movement. No wonder it is so powerful.

I know this episode was a plot necessity at this point, but can we just get back to the main show, and as someone pointed out a week or two ago I never realized how short these episodes were. Still a decent episode, just ready for more hell breaking loose at the office.
This episode was a waste.
We hardly got anything.
Felt like a late season LOST episode.

I don’t think her having the four tempers in her childhood bedroom is a bombshell discovery. The four tempers appear all over this show at this point.
It was also revealed she went to the Myrtle Eagan school for girls in season 1.

Not trying to be a dick but how is that only just now obvious? The religious zealotry of the Lumon faithfuls was pretty obvious in season 1.

Always thought so but the episode showed how it operates while looking at it from the outside. They destroy towns, engage in barbaric child labor, get the people hooked on ether, and even exploit their most talented, rabid followers.
Aunt is living without electricity. No lights, no heat . Just lanterns and fire for heat. yet she stays a zealot.

I expect lesser episodes with any tv show, they've got so much time to fill, and making this a full episode makes sense considering how important we now know Harmony is but IMO it does deserve its 6.7 at IMDB compared with the rest of the show.

Yep. More mystery box. But as long as it's a one off, we'll see.
And WTF was Devon doing calling so damn much? Is this a bait scheme or are both she and Scott really that retarded?

We got the harmony invented severance bit. Who knows who else out there is pissed off about tech/ideas they’ve stolen.
We got to see how messed up they leave towns. Who knows how many other towns like that with pissed off people are around.
We get a couple more characters introduced. Who knows whether or not they’ll play a part again.
I think there will be other things that tie back into this episode as well

I'm struggling to what people want from this show. It's probably the most intelligent, visual, curious, story (for me in the last 10 years) ... and the journey is why. Do people want to know Mark dies at the end?
Why not enjoy such a creative show, both writing and cinematic?

This show runs like a novel. Each episode is a chapter. If you view S2E8 in that light, you realize that the episode was perfect. The writer picked the perfect time to give you the Cobel backstory. There was more character development (albeit of one character) in that episode than any other. On top of that it was strikingly beautiful.
Some of you people are typical modern Americans. You want to be entertained, on your terms, how and when you want it. Just shut up and enjoy greatness. You don’t see it that often.

I hate this attitude. Art appreciation is inherently subjective.
Nothing wrong with not liking something. If you don't like it, you don't like it. There's no such thing as objective greatness. Is Severance great. Depends on what you judge it against in my opinion. Against the history of TV, absolutely. Against the best of Tarkovsky and Ozu...not even close.
Having said all that, I felt like this was a lesser episode until I was able to rewatch it this morning and it was fricking amazing on a second watch. Plus I loved how the very end seemed to propel us forward with Mark getting on the phone and Fire Woman cranking up.

I think some people were expecting salt’s neck to be a spaceship or something

Yea I’m not sure what was expected there. I thought it was very very well done but different strokes for different folks.

At the very least this episode cleared something up for me from Season 1. It kinda bugged me how quickly Cobel was able to remove dead Petey’s chip. Now we know why she was able to.
I enjoyed this episode.

But there is also something to his point of an audience wanting instant gratification or shows tailoring to them specifically.
Not every show is for every one. That's an absolute. I think the point here is that some of us are absolutely loving the show and the creators vision and we're here for the journey. Very much like his analogy to a novel and we're getting a chapter in each episode.
It seems to me a lot of the complaints are people wanting the conclusion to the story without taking the journey. For me, the cinematography is amazing and the writing is curious and well thought out. I want to watch more to get to the culmination, not force it now.

This show is a beautiful work of art, but I don’t always understand the episode
Sorry for the dumb questions but my wife and I have two small kids and it’s always a shite show in our house and I don’t have time to go back and rewatch stuff or Listen to an hour and a half podcast review
But was that guy her ex-husband and who was the old lady?
I’m just asking because have we seen them before or was this the first time we’ve introduced them?

I got the feeling that they grew up together and both went through Lumon since childhood. He just stayed behind in the dead company town.

The old lady is Cobel's aunt. That is Aunt Sissy to Cobel and Sissy was supposed to be looking after Cobel's mother- Sissy's sister - and that's how they got into "who pulled the plug" argument.
This is the first time we were introduced to either that I remember. The idea behind this episode (my own conjecture) is to bring Cobel back after we last saw her and show her true backstory. We only really knew her as severance floor manager, etc.

Good stuff, thanks. I am very interested to see if we get more about her inventing severance
