It kind of looked like a white man and black woman, but it was hard to tell.

I think I need to watch season 1 all over again. Might catch some easter eggs that would be obvious now.

Reghabi mentioned that Petey didn't follow her instructions. That's why we saw Mark drinking that whatever crap and I think she was keeping him on task regarding her instructions. I worry with her gone now about Mark's health.
I really liked this episode following last weeks. What a huge contrast in scenery, visuals, and content. From showing Mark and Gemma's love story to the cold desolate Lumon town with Aunt Sissy and Harmony as antagonists to each other.
I still think we're getting a lot of answers, albeit some subtlety along with more mystery. Easily we learn Cobel imagined and designed the Severance process and Jame Eagan took her ideas as his own. She allowed it due to her previous indoctrination to the cult. Now it will be seen if Helena made a mistake by not giving Cobel what she wanted and telling her that she overestimated her contribution.
Also, Ms. Huang seems to not be related/cloned/etc from Gemma, Mark as was speculated prior - although we don't know for sure. But, it's very likely she grew up in her own Lumon village town and was identified as a candidate for the Wintertide Fellowship, as was Harmony in the past.

Was Sissy mad at Cobel for continuing to work with Lumon even though they stole her work?

What gave you that idea? She tried to throw the notebook with the designs into the fire, and said that she owed fealty to Lumon.

The only stretch to me is somehow cobel designed and made all of this stuff on her own in an ether mining town?
Seems like a lot for a child in a one mill town. I know it said she was a scholarship recipient but to me that seems like the biggest leap without filling in the gaps.

Brain fart. My bad.

Not trying to bitch too much. I love this show. I will definitely need to rewatch. She did mention some of the very specific functions of severance such as the Glasgow block and the OTC so it made me think it was supposed to be pretty advanced. Not sure what was in the notebook as an initial concept and what got worked out at Lumon as a full time employee once they knew she was gifted.

My initial take was she was recognizing her concepts/initial designs as she was flipping through the notebook. It's clearly insinuated that she hadn't been to Salt's Neck since probably her childhood and hadn't seen her notebook since then - or at least in a very long time. So her recognizing her concepts and listing them off was more affirmation to her that she wasn't mistaken that those were really her ideas. It could be as she aged and was more and more integrated into Lumon that a part of her could have thought perhaps she was mistaken and Jame Eagan came up with some of the ideas.
This would come back to when Helena questioned her about her actual contribution and was going to bring her to talk to the board. Cobel of course got out of Dodge and needed to make sure she wasn't misremembering.

She said she would have been banished or something to that effect if she tried to take credit for her ideas/work from Jame.

Who’s creeper? Jame Gumb or Jame Eagan?

Sorry if this is obvious or has already been addressed, but what exactly was her state when she got off the elevator? I thought that she "unsevered" when she took the elevator, but she was confused, and lost, and Milchick easily gets her to go back up on the elevator by telling her that her outtie was there for an art expo and that she accidentally got on the wrong elevator?

She went up as Gemma. She came out as Ms Casey. One of her innies. Ms Casey last knew she was being retired in season 1 and figured she’d die. So she really just woke up immediately after that probably very confused as to why she’s awake. Probably thought she’d get some more life. But no. Milcheck was brutal sending her right back down.
Imagine coming back to life for a minute just to have someone slam that door in your face. That was absolutely brutal.
ETA: Gemma is weird because everyone else really only works between two levels. The real world and the severed floor and it’s easy to distinguish.
Gemma/Ms Casey exists in a weird state. In the real world she is Gemma. On the severed floor she is Ms Casey. On the testing floor she is Gemma again. However, on the testing floor there are rooms. And inside those rooms she has a unique innie for each one.

Unlike others we have met that have had the severance procedure, Gemma lives on the testing floor (below the severance floor) in her outie state. When she enters one of the labeled rooms on the testing floor, she becomes an innie in that room/scenario (such as the dentists office). In that room, all the innie knows is every time she is "alive" she is at the dentists office. When exiting the room, outie Gemma has no recollection, but her teeth hurt.
They also used outie Gemma to go up the elevator to the severed floor, where she becomes innie Ms. Casey.
This is why, as stated, when Gemma "escapes" up the elevator, she becomes innie Ms. Casey and has no idea why she is there. That is when Milkshake does his evil and sends her back down, and when the elevator is back on the testing floor outie Gemma is disheartened.

Ok, so Ms. Casey still thinks her outtie lives in the outside world, but her outtie is actually forcibly kept on the testing floor, but on the testing floor she is also severed into different personalities depending on which room she is subjected to.
So the elevator she gets on actually severs her, and severed Ms. Casey is confused as to where she is or what she is doing, thus Milchick easily convinces her that her outtie got on the wrong elevator and to go back to the elevator so she can un-sever herself.
Got it.
This show is a bit tough when stoned
thank you, don't know where I'd be without you guys.

You got it! It's definitely a different dynamic from what we've seen from the MDR severed employees and think about O&D severed employees. The Mammalians Nurturable department, is unsure - one of them mentions an outie, but as a whole they look gruff.
Gemma is the only one we know about that is used in her unique way.

This is why I am on the side that Milchick is not really turning on Lumon. Maybe he has had thoughts, but ultimately he's a company man. At least so it seems right now.
I do feel like the angle with Natalie Kalen and the himself as Kier paintings has not been fully fleshed out yet though.

quote:I think this will be readdressed in the future. Milchick certainly didn't take kindly to the paintings and eventually stored them away, but when he talks to Natalie, I read it as she agreed with him and wanted to say something, but also has that air of caution that she can't say anything as she knows Lumon is watching everything.

I think there may be a time where they are together outside of Lumon's earshot and discuss it frankly, which could lead to them not being 100% company people.

Do we have a timeframe of when the Gemma episode was happening as compared to "real time" events? At least when she tried to escape.
When she turned up on the severed floor as Ms Casey, at what point are we seeing Milchick at (if that makes sense). Is this happening pre-Cobel departure? Did this happen before or after the Kier paintings?
Did he have on a shirt and tie? So maybe post-Cobel. I was starting to root for him post paintings but him turning her back was just evil. I don't know about a redemption for him now.
