I get what RLDSC was talking about with the ending. The scene before the problem with the solid Xenon felt like a solid ending. The rest, where he goes to the planet was a nice touch but it could have ended earlier, had him getting back to Earth and being proclaimed a hero as well. It's not movie-breaking (nothing in the movie was), just a difference of personal preference.
It could have ended that way, but it would have been a major deviation from the book. Would’ve seemed like a lame generic heroic ending.

Grace's entire character arc lead him to staying on Rocky's planet. He had nothing keeping him on Earth. Even the potential death of all of his students wasn't enough to give his life to save Earth. He was forced to go on PHM. However, the imminent death of Rocky and his planet pushed him to make the brave move to sacrifice his own life. The satisfaction of knowing he saved Earth was enough. He was truly happy with his closest friend at the end.

Gross. I would have legit rioted if that was the ending

Enjoyed the book then enjoyed the audio book...
I went in with astronomical expectations, so it's taken me a few days to relax and absorb the movie. After the semester of physics that Weir fit into that novel, the film felt insanely rushed to me. I kept thinking, "You're glossing over the best parts!" It ended up being an amazingly entertaining and beautifully shot CliffsNotes.
I was particularly let down by the Beetles being just a quick mention during the build up to the launch, until... they saved the reveal of the Beetle's names with that amazing shot of them being deployed to the sound of Two of Us. I have to admit, that was a stroke of genius that gave a resonance that the book and audio book couldn't achieve. I didn't think the film could surprise me but it did, with this.
We saw it in Dolby and will go back to see it in Imax. (AMC Oneal's Dolby theater isn't what it use to be. There's a loud hiss of the HVAC system in the theater that is incredibly distracting during quiet scenes.)

Grace becoming a teacher on Enid is one of my all time favorite book ending ever.

Read the book over the weekend. Really good and easy read. Really expanded on the science. But same general path as the movie. Especially with the flashbacks a he regains memory.

Wife and I went and saw it in imax last night. What a great experience. She was dreading going because 1. We weren’t going to get out till 930 on a work night, and 2. She just hates going to the theatre in general. I told her I promise it’s going to be a special experience. She was blown away afterwards and cried all throughout when things were looking bad for Rocky
.
I actually really liked how the author chose to depict Grace as a common guy who absolutely did not want to go and did not want to rise to the occasion. 99% of the time in books and movies it shows the protagonist agreeing to step up to the occasion, sometimes being indifferent, but ultimately deciding to do it for the greater good. I think most of us assume we would react that way, but in reality many of us would would be like Grace and be like frick that I’m not going up there I’ll just die in 30 years. I thought that was a painfully realistic scene and it was hard to watch when they forced him.
Also, I’m sure it’s been mentioned before but the scene when he enters the Petrova line was fricking amazing with all the pink

Man.. that scene hit and that is a “ THIS is why we go to the movies” scene for me.

What’s crazy about that scene is the closeups are all practical effects.

At a 2.5 hour run time, I was ok with this

Going back to earth would have been crazy risky. They were put into Comas originally because study's showed they would have gone crazy if in a small ship for 4+ years.
Also with time relativity with traveling to and from the mission I think like 30 years would have passed on earth even though he would have only aged like 10 years?
Everything would have been different.

So like Armageddon? Nah. That movie has been done 100 times.

Well it sounds like they may develop another one. I know there were rumors of Andy weir writing a sequel for his next book but I wonder if he just does a movie. Would be cool to see what’s happening on earth over the 30 years and then dive deeper into grace’s story on Erid. Maybe end with a return. In the book he’s basically too old to do it, but in the movie he still seems young enough to consider.

I think he was early 50s in the book, just think Erid’s gravity was brutal on his body.

I can see potential for a sequel here, but man, I hate that when something is good, it gets squeezed for $$$. It almost always ends up being a disappointment and spoils the original work somewhat.

Agreed. I hope they don’t. Some stories are best left to the imagination. It rarely works or lives up to the original.

No sequel has ever shite all over an original for me like Wreck It Ralph 2 did. God, that show was a steaming pile of shite when the original might be my favorite animated film of all time.

quote:That’s one thing I don’t think the movie portrayed well: that he goes to save Rocky expecting it to lead to his death. Either from starvation or from the completely hostile environment of Erid. He gets lucky that the Eridians are able to synthesize food and a suitable environment, though the high gravity takes a toll on his body.
However, the imminent death of Rocky and his planet pushed him to make the brave move to sacrifice his own life.
It’s his redemption from being the coward who wouldn’t sacrifice himself to save his own race, even after being given the out of having a way back home.
The movie doesn’t really get into his food supply, so going back for Rocky seems less like a suicide mission

He does tell Rocky that he could possibly make it 4 years if he rationed his food. Rocky understands that Grace is expecting to die.

Why didn't they release this thing in June or July? I can't imagine it wouldn't crush the competition.
