My top have already been listed but I consider Brainstorm to be an overlooked hidden gem to many. Its mainly know as the last film Natalie Wood starred in before her death. It stars her and Christopher Walken as scientist that develop technology to record human thought. Great performances, interesting story and one of the eeriest, goose bump inducing scores (by James Horner) I've ever heard.

I think that is the Philadelphia experiment

Soylent Green with Charlton Heston and Edward G. Robinson, and some nice "furniture".
I also enjoyed The Omega Man with Heston

No that is the Philadelphia Experiment. Cool movie too though. The Final Countdown is about a US Aircraft Carrier from the 80's is transported back to 1941 before the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

Starman (1984) is probably my favorite.
"He yelled, 'Greetings' and melted his lug wrench?"
Really want a sequel about his son. Jeff Bridges can visit.
Stream on Fubu & eight rentals.
Starman on JustWatch
---------------------------------
Another one I really like is Outland (1981). It could have been a Western with miners who wanted morphine or whiskey, or set in the 70's with speed, or set in the 80's with cocaine, or set today with meth & opioids. Should it have been named Back to the Future IV? Miners on one of Jupiter's moons are going to be no different than offshore rig workers spending their two weeks on checks in Morgan City. People who do dangerous things for money are probably gamblers by nature. They're going to want to celebrate when they win. They might need a stimulant to keep working hard.
Eight rentals available.

There was a single season TV series I remember watching as a kid staring Robert Hays. He comes back to find his son and the go on a trek to find Jenny.
[/img] I love the film.

Interstellar
Sunshine
Moon
i'm sure all have been mentioned.
after looking back at some other posts... Children of Men doesn't really fit the bill. It's a GOAT movie and I love it, but the only "science" to it is figuring out why we don't have children any more. there's nothing advanced or futuristic to the future depicted there.
Hunger Games has more SciFi elements to it in my opinion if we were going for dystopian future type movie.

Wanted to add passenger is a good flick if you havent seen it. I guess some people maybe dont like it because of the actors in it?

Outland is considered to be High Noon in space.
At least one scene from Event Horizon was a lift from Outland where one of the miners has a psychotic episode and gets decompressed in an elevator.

I personally enjoy the movie but I think it was Lawrence oversaturation, Pratt being labeled as a conservative and the entire moral dilemma presented.

Gattaca is definitely a hidden sci fi gem for those who haven't seen it.

I'm glad to see Sunshine mentioned by so many. I saw it in a hotel randomly, it was just what was on HBO or whatever. I didn't see the first 20 minutes, but loved the rest. Never heard anyone talk about it except here.

Super tough to limit just 3...
Alien
Contact
Safety Not Guaranteed (hidden gem) Indy film with Aubrey Plaza.
How to choose between The Thing or Stargate (Kurt Russel) over The 5th Element, Interstellar or Moon? And this list at least needs a mention of2001: A Space Odyssey.
