believe I might give Phantasm a whirl tomorrow

Not sure if it was this thread or a different one, but I posted about Phantasm a year or two ago. That movie terrified me as a kid and I hadn't seen it since then, and I watched it again and it was borderline trash and not really very scary at all. It just felt more silly than anything now. So maybe it just doesn't hold up well anymore, who knows.

It was so bad I was actually disappointed that I watched it because it ruined my scary memories of it as a kid a bit.

Found the thread: LINK

And I forgot that someone gives the absolutely most detailed breakdown of the entire Phantasm franchise in that thread.

The first Phantasm movie is a cult classic and a precursor to the nightmare on elm street movies.

I watched a bunch of good stuff the last week or 2. Saw x, Don't breathe 2, talk to me, the black phone, megan were all great they sucked me in within the first half hour and i was thoroughly entertained till the end.

The strangers chapter 1 was the lone turd that movie sucked.

I just watched it with my 20 year old son & he loved it. He instantly picked up on the homage to Dune(hand in the box). It may not be as scary as it was when we were kids, but still holds up really well.

Speaking of movies that still hold up, I watched The Howling for the first time in many years & it's still as good as it ever was. Imo, the best werewolf movie ever made.

Lots of nudity in that one. When they start howling while banging.

Another movie I end up recommending to everyone during October becuase it's criminally unwatched is Body Snatchers. I've talked to many people who love the franchise & don't even know this movie exists. It stars Gabrielle Anwar, Forest Whitaker, Meg Tilly who turns in an amazing performance, & R. Lee Ermy as an Army General. Screenplay was written by Stuart Gordon & directed by Abel Ferrara.

People really dropped the ball on what could have been a great horror franchise.

Skimming thread for suggestions..one to add: The Mothman Prophecies

This one actually bleeds into the Christmas season too, so works for pre-Halloween or as a “scary” Christmas movie

Just finished The Void. It was okay.
So far this month I've watched As Above, As Below, IT Chapter 2 (never saw it), and Cabinet of Curiosities Lot 36, The Autopsy, and Pickman's Model

I've been on cosmic horror kick listening to all the audiobooks of Lovecraft this month, trying to correlate with some movies. Need to do Mouth of Madness and Colour Out of Space.

The Pickman's Model Cabinet of Curiosities is so much better than the Lovecraft story IMO

The Void is super low budget and I wish it had been done with a little more production talent and money. I watched it again a few days ago myself. The script desperately needs an editor to trim down fat.

Mouth of Madness

Great cosmic horror.

Colour Out of Space.

I sat on this for years but watched it a couple months ago and it blew me away. I knew I should have trusted Richard Stanley.

Watched this psychological horror recently and feel it’s recommendation-worthy. It’s on Prime.

Oh man, that poster alone isn't sitting well with me at all.

Synopsis of what it's about? I'm dragging slowly, but finally starting to get into the horror mood lately and want to rifle through my list a good bit over the next several weeks. I may check this one out.

I don’t want to give away much more. Stars Sean Harris.

That's what I remember about it, that it was fairly meh.

What are your thoughts on that? I always pimp that one in the horror movie threads. I loved it and thought it was so well done, and legit creepy at times, and the atmosphere of the catacombs was fantastic.

When y'all say cosmic horror, what do you mean by that? Like science fiction-y? Space? What exactly?

I though Eli Roth's Thanksgiving was a decent slasher with some good humor. It was a good throwback to his fake trailer in the Grindhouse double feature. May be a better watch around Thanksgiving than Halloween, however.

My kids have been raving about the Babadook, so I think I'll finally get around to watching it this year.

I thought Babadook was excellent until the end, and then the way it ended ruined the whole movie for me.

If you watch it please report back with your thoughts on it.

More mythological.

It's popularized by HP Lovecraft and the very basic definition is being attacked some some unknowable/incomprehensible entity (often a god of some sort). Themes involve forbidden knowledge, a sense of being insignificant in the universe (once the larger universe is revealed), madness, superstition, and interdimensional godlike creatures threatening us.

The 2 best examples from what you've probably seen are In the Mouth of Madness and the Mist.

It's much more effective written than on screen (a lot of it is psychological based on the revelation to the protagonist and the fear/dread that ultimately set in), which is why when it's successful on screen it's often celebrated.

My definition from the thread that will never be posted

quote:

You are an insignificant speck within the cosmos that cannot comprehend what terror is being revealed. The genre popularized by H.P. Lovecraft requires real internalization, which blends with psychological horror. Can be found relying on sci-fi, fantasy, occult, or monster tropes.

I just stole this from this Reddit thread

quote:

Cosmic Horror is the realization that the universe is more vast and complicated than you will ever begin to comprehend, and nothing you, or even the entirety of civilization will do will ever make a big enough mark to matter. Your not special, and anything that happens to you is just random happenstance with no reason behind it because the beings we consider gods are so beyond our understanding that they don’t even acknowledge our existence. The bacteria that die coming into contact with your body have more significance to you than the entirety of human civilization does to something like Chthulu.
