I thought Babadook was excellent until the end, and then the way it ended ruined the whole movie for me.
***SPOILERS***
I cannot stand movies/stories with the "the protagonist is revealed to be the monster/the antagonist was in the protagonist's head" trope. The crazy part was it was SO popular around the time this movie was released.
***END SPOILERS***

I though Eli Roth's Thanksgiving was a decent slasher with some good humor. It was a good throwback to his fake trailer in the Grindhouse double feature. May be a better watch around Thanksgiving than Halloween, however.
I agree. A bit gory but it's Eli Roth. Still found it to be enjoyable. Even though it is a Thanksgiving movie, it still gives that Fall vibe that scratches the itch like a Halloween movie. So it counts

If you're into slow burns. The whole movie is two characters in one location performing occult rituals.

Babadook spoilers.
But that’s not what happened. The babadook was real in the end. What I hated is that at the end it is basically their pet that stays in the basement. They didn’t “defeat” it or anything, just moreso that they sort of tamed it to a degree.
That was just overly silly and stupid to me, and it ruined what was an otherwise great horror movie for me up to that point.

A Dark Song is fricking awesome

Great description of cosmic horror SFP
It works so well when written because the reader can conjure up whatever images they want. Many descriptors of dread or terror are “indescribable” and “unutterable” so it’s up to you to figure it out. Very similar to hiding the monster building suspense until the end.
I liked As Above so Below bc of the catacomb setting. I kind of wish it got more in depth with the supernatural stuff and “hell” aspects but respected the journey. Main character was aggravating though I kind of wished she died the danger she put others through.

History of the Occult (2020)
Really great horror movie.
On prime, Kanopy, hoopla, Tubi, Fandango/Vudu
Will make a full thread in the morning.

I never thought Argentinian horror would be a thing but here we are.

I had to check if it was the guy who did Terrified/When Evil Lurks, but he really has no credits. I read on Reddit after watching it was kind of a film school project or something.

Watching this tonight. Never thought of this as a good fit for Halloween, but it’s as close as this franchise gets to horror in its feature films:

A Dark Song
Enjoyed this. Thanks for the rec.
I don’t want to spoil this for anyone so I’ll be vague about it but still might give some things away. Consider this a warning. (POSSIBLE SPOILER)
So she actually has 3 different wishes throughout the film (first one was the lie). I think swapping the order of these wishes would have made it better (ending much more interesting): 3, 1, then 2. She longs for 3 but 1 just overtakes it because she also wants to know what really happened to her son by asking him.
She believes it all in this version even though the guy is trying to convince her they can lie until the very end. That leads the final wish to being 2 which opens up any number of possibilities at that point. Much darker ones too.
The actress in this really delivers BTW.

I've watched several movies based on the recommendations in this thread. My thoughts:
Talk To Me - bleh. I really liked the conceIpt of conjuring as a party trick, but i ended up hating all the teen melodrama & who gives a shite storyline after that. This could have been Idle Hands 2.0 & they squandered it. I kinda hate this movie - well I hated the main character, at least. Stupid & completely forgettable. Also, the whole "horror as an allegory for grief" is getting old, imo. It's time for us to move on.
Deadstream - One of the great things about horror movies is you have license to go full tilt boogie & thats what they did. You can waterboard a man with his own piss & everyone will love it. I thought Shawn did a great job. Even when it went stupid I was fully invested & really enjoyed this from start to finish.
Haunt - Man those first 10-15 minutes were rough. On par with the worst shite on Prime. They mamnged to make a decent film after that. Not great, but not bad at all. I would recommend.
Oddity - Tense. Atmospheric. Dreadful. Pretty much hits all the marks for a ghost/haunted house movie. Good twist in the middle. This movie should be getting more acclaim than it currently is getting.

Man, I watched the first half of this last night and was bored out of my mind. I absolutely hate it so far. Please tell me it gets better in the second half.
The only redeeming thing about it is the sheer creepiness of the spider puppet.

Don’t know what to tell ya. I enjoyed it and plan on watching it again at some point.

I’d say if you’ve already turned it off then you’re probably not going to like the second half.

Watched good ole Arachnophobia last night. It’s become a tradition for me.
If you like spider movies you should check out Sting on Hulu. While it's not the most memorable creature feature I've seen you can tell the makers like the genre (several references to other spider flicks) and it was nice that they did a lot of practical effects. The little girl in it could for sure have a career in horror if she wants it b/c she's great at giving a death glare.
