Very cool.

Still have reservations, given her body of work.

She has good movies under her belt, but there is a theme.

Just like with Rian, I will give her a chance.

A shot for shot remake of Too gun, but set in rogue squadron setting. Make it happen.

I agree.

But like I said earlier, she has never directed a movie with a male lead.

Top Gun with a female lead, is a straight to DVD "3 for $5" kinda flick.

Can she even do a film that doesn't have a female empowerment theme? Can she direct a film with a male lead?

Nothing against the theme itself, just a legit question.

Her father was a fighter pilot and is apparently a big inspiration in her wanting to do a pilot story.

So I wouldn’t say a female lead is definite. She may try to base the main character on her father. Since it is a Squadron, it probably will have multiple leads.

I bet they bring Wedge back too. In Squadrons (the newest game) he is still with Rogue Squadron. I know at some point in the timeline he is injured and no longer flies. Maybe he is in a commanding role.

I want this to be good, but the image of the logo next to Kathleen Kennedy does not instill confidence.

Sign up to make the film. Star Wars fans are the worst. Why couldn't you recast Luke and Wedge as younger versions of themselves? Hammill and Lawson would probably be all for it.

Seems like a good film to bring in Hera Syndulla.

This is pretty awesome actually. Great promo and personal story! Gives me optimism that she has passion for this. Doesn't mean she won't frick it up, but at least we get some confidence that this is something personal to her.

Yeah, Rogue Squadron is big enough for them not to get involved. It’d be like asking having a movie based in the Pacific and not having James Doolittle involved. It’s much bigger than those two characters.

Wait, what?

What lore am I unaware of.

One of the two was commander of the damn thing for its entire existence.

And it’ll be odd for it to still exist post sequel trilogy if that’s the non-Wedge time frame as they DID establish Wedge was active, as he was a gunner in Rise of Skywalker. But not in a Starfighter, implying rogue Squadron ceased to exist.

This.

I don't know her life in detail; really only what I read in this thread and her video just now. She said father died, so did her mother raise her on her own? If so, that might explain a lot of the "female empowerment" stuff.

But this might not be that angle, it might honestly be a story she's wanted to do for a long time, to flesh out her father.

I go back to Steve Trevor. WW is definitely about Diana, but Steve is great. Dashing, handsome, heroic, noble, cocky without arrogant, and he ultimately sacrifices for the right reasons, instead of just standing around waiting for Diana to fix things. He accepts the help of the superheroine gladly, but at the end "I gotta do this". That's not feminist; when she's disillusioned abut things, he doesn't waver on his own path at all.
He never stopped being the guy on a mission.

We may get Rogue Squadron with this; they appreciate the Jedi stuff, but "we gotta do this, with or without them".

Looks like an OT X-wing (see engines that are full cylinders versus ST engines, which seem cut in half).

Just my observation.

I would like to be excited, Really

Calling your shot two years in advance is not the way to start out BTW.

As always, if they create a compelling story with engaging actors and resist the urge to make it a giant CGI cumshot it can be great.

To half arse the essential elements of a good story and take the source material for granted just because it is loosely tied to Star Wars would be a huge mistake.

I don't know what we'll get, anymore than you do. That's a legit concern. But if that interview is honest, and she honestly wants to pay homage to her deceased father, then I think we're at least coming from the right place.
It doesn't sound like she wants to make a Star Wars movie, it sounds like she wants to make a fighter pilot movie.

I’ll allow it.

The newer canon novel Lost Stars is essentially this. It follows two childhood friends/flames on different paths. Both ace pilots, she feels obligated to join the Imperial Academy, and he defects from the Empire and joins the rebellion. Would make for a great film as it touches on elements just prior to, during and after events of the OT on the periphery, but develops each of their characters and convictions in their own ways as they follow their paths.

Focusing on two pilots, Lost Stars would make for a good Star Wars movie with a different feel. Focusing on their missions as pilots would give it a unique granularity.
