Not to beat a dead horse, but by having an older actor play Napoleon you miss another character trait.

Older men willing and enthusiastically followed the orders of a 20-something into battles. For an analogy, imagine a mechanic shop full of seasoned veterans giddy and listening intently to their new 22 year old boss. That is something that cannot be conveyed no matter how good Phoenix is.

some of them do have fancy receptions / parties after, but alas this is a morning showing with ascots and espressos.

The trailer shows the Siege of Toulon...Napoleon was only 24 years old.

It shows the Egyptian Expedition, he was only 29.

He crowned himself Emperor at 35.

He was 36 at Austerlitz.

Hell, he was only 46 at Waterloo...Phoenix is still two years older toward Napoleon's end.

should have gone the Benjamin Buttons path started old with Joaquin and as he got younger just used younger actors.

Andrew's Napoleon the Great was really good. It motivated me to read Tallyrand by Duff Cooper which I didn't enjoy as a whole but did add some historical context.

saw it earlier today ... they had a social media embargo in effect, so will say i don't disagree with this official review. Some masterful moments for sure, but IMO not a real contender for best picture.

That’s a lot for any audience to digest in a single sitting, and while Scott can be commended for his ambition, neither he nor Scarpa manage to build those many plot pieces into a fluid narrative.

This is setting up the Director’s Cut to be on the level of Kingdom of Heaven.

As someone who enjoyed reading Killers of the Flower Moon and is looking forward to the film, it is a bit odd that movie comes in at more than 3.5 hours and Napoleon a little more than 2.5.

I hate when they play modern music like that for movie trailers like that

I cannot take credit for this observation, but a friend of mine who saw the movie said, “It’s like watching Tim Robinson play Napoleon,” and this is pretty dead on. Oh, make no mistake, this is by design. This is not my way of saying Napoleon is bad. It’s honestly now one of my favorite movies of the year – a movie that, before I saw it, looked a little too stoic and “important.” Instead, I probably laughed harder during this movie than I have during any new movie this year. And the laughs are genuine and intentional.

Doesn't sound like I'm going to enjoy this movie as much as I thought.

This and the Masters of the Air stuff that’s been coming up are setting up for a double disappointment

Those worried about a glorification of the dictator needn't have feared.

Well, at least we don't have to fear anymore.

The fact that no one even tries to have a French accent kinda bothers me. Not a fan of those color filters either.

I mean...a lot of these historians who criticize a film or TV show's historical inaccuracies do history for a living. As a historian myself, I'm usually able to overlook historical inaccuracies and anachronisms due to my ability to separate movies from documentaries. However, there have been certain instances with Ridley Scott (particularly Kingdom of Heaven) where I found myself rolling my eyes.
