A summary of French reviews of Napoleon. They are not amused and far more critical than Brit and US critics. It bothers them to hear Viva la France shouted by American accented voices.
Most are positive about the magnificent battle scenes and much less so about the personal relationships. Wanderings from history are also bothersome.

Ridley’s response:

The French don't even like themselves.
Bonus quote for the historians:
quote:
When I have issues with historians, I ask: 'Excuse me, mate, were you there? No? Well, shut the frick up then.'
Now I really want to see it

Ridley Scott has been using that same line since Gladiator. He loves to play around with the facts when it's an event outside of living memory. He did his best to stay as close to the facts with Black Hawk Down, however. Probably because the historical event in question had happened less than 10 years prior to the movie coming out.

The American accent on Napoleon is throwing me off.
—The worst part was when Napoleon said, “Yo, Adrienne!”

Andrew's Napoleon the Great was really good. It motivated me to read Tallyrand by Duff Cooper which I didn't enjoy as a whole but did add some historical context
I've read both, Andrew Roberts' book is a must read in my opinion. I think I like Tallyrand a lot more than you did, but I have always been biased to Tallyrand as a statesman. Both books are excellent recomendations.
