Emmy Award-winning Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have found their new home. Nearly three months after Deadline revealed that Benioff & Weiss were being courted by six studios for an overall global deal to write, produce and direct new series and films, we can reveal that they have signed an exclusive deal with Netflix.

Nobody was confirming numbers, but sources tell Deadline the deal is in the 9-figure range like some of the other mega-deals signed by show creators like Shonda Rhimes and Ryan Murphy, each of whom also moved to Netflix. The deal for Benioff & Weiss was brokered by Gretchen Rush, their longtime attorney at Hansen Jacobson Teller.

When Deadline revealed that Benioff & Weiss were meeting on the overall deal at a time when Game of Thrones was wrapping up its final season of the drama, the duo had met with Netflix as well as HBO/WarnerMedia, Disney, Comcast, Amazon and Apple. By late last month, the field had narrowed to Netflix, Amazon and Disney. Benioff & Weiss spent the past decade at HBO, fully focused on the groundbreaking series based on the George RR Martin novels.

They farther they got from the source material the worse they got. I’ll be interested to see something they do wholly on their own.

I'm actually shocked that people want them so bad after how that series ended.

They're using "wins" pretty loosely.

This is overblown. The writing down the stretch was a disaster, but these guys still crafted a spectacle for a decade. Writing aside, everything about the show was amazing. It's a miracle the show was so good for as long as it was.

They were still fantastic producers and directors.

They just need a strong writer with them.

I think it's also a bit exaggerated given the gravity of trying to finish the clusterfrick GRRM left without source material for the last couple of seasons. I'd have more faith in them writing something from start to finish than to have to pick up and finish a big series like ASOIAF.

Somehow I don’t see this as a point in Netflix’ favor.

These two jackasses refuse to be seen in public because there are so many people upset at how Game Of Thrones finishes up. Or maybe they just forgot about the big convention held in San Diego each year.

That spectacle was largely balanced on the five books already written by George RR Martin.

The wheels started coming off GOT in season 5, which coincided with the first major departure from the books by having Jamie and Bronn take the road to Dorne.

Netflix deserves this punishment for making the deal with the Obamas.

Let’s face it, no one was going to be happy with the ending of GoT. With the litany of theories and the fact that once something becomes popular, the “hipster” element within and from outside of the show’s fan base starts to kick in.

I do think they should used more episodes and spread it out more, but that would have made the “nothing is happening, this episode is filler since no major action pieces or major characters died” crowd go full tard.

One thing that did hurt the show is that they did lose a lot of the great actors as the seasons went on and outside of Dinklage and maybe Flynn, can you really say any of the top 10 actors that were on the show made it to the end?

Liam was good, so were Rory and Gwendolin. Other than them?

Losing Addy, Bean, Madden, Dance (particularly him), Gleason, Rheon, Fairley, and Pascal before season 5 ended was a huge loss of talent. Rigg was the last of the top 10 talents to go before we were left with Dinklage and Flynn.

Anyways, we’ll see what they come up with. You’ll have that crowd of dunces who will shite on it when the name of the show/plot is announced, then when set photos come out, then when a trailer is shown, and will shite on the series premiere before the first scene is over with so you’ll have to wade through that to even get a halfway fair assessment of it all. Hope it’s good but no skin off my back if it’s not.

I was willing to give these guys the benefit of the doubt for the GOT failure and instead blame success and the fatman.

UNTIL someone here mentioned that these guys wrote X-MEN Origins - Wolverine.

HaHa. Netflix stock is crashing. Looking forward to the Irishman but how did they spend 200M on that? The CGI better look great.

don't buy Netflix

It was great until the season 6 finale, which was undeniably one of the most shocking and eventful episodes of any TV series.

Some departures from the book worked well. I was glad they left Faegon out, because it would have over-complicated things and really wasn't necessary.

But I'm sticking to my theory that the last season was intentionally botched, either to appease their Disney masters

Or, more nefariously, to piss off white guys for electing Trump, part of a multi-pronged attack that included the ruining of Star Wars, Ghostbusters and Marvel.

Writing isn’t everything. Their production and directing were very good for most of GOT. A few gaffes like the damn Starbucks cup and the water bottle and the too dark Battle of Winterfell, but most of Game of Thrones was fantastic in both production and directing, especially considering they were using untrained actors for a lot of major characters

My thought is that they were given the final endings for all characters and they went “frick this frick that and frick this thing in particular.”

Martin’s been building his story for years and is including a lot of elements they adapted out. Some of those elements probably had a HUGE influence on the final ending and it was too late to fix it by that point, so they just said “frick it, let’s just drive this home.”

JK Rowling had a similar situation with Warner Brothers and had to strongly hint that one seemingly minor character, Kreacher, is kind of a big deal and needs to appear in Half-Blood Prince instead of being adapted out.

They're not necessarily bad writers either. Sure the final seasons left a bad taste in everyone's mouth. But keep in mind there are some scenes in the early seasons that don't come from the source material that are absolutely outstanding. Mostly just conversations between two or three characters. The one that stands out to me is the scene with Robert and Cersei where they discuss their marriage.
