MoviePass on its last legs?

Edit:
On the morning of Thursday July 26 I noticed unexpected surge pricing of most movies, not just MI6 (which was opening that day). That seemed suspicious to me. In the afternoon I went to see Unfriended: Dark Web. I checked into the app but the MoviePass card was declined. In fact, everyone in line was trying to use the MP card and all got declined. It turns out that processing for users of the physical card was completely shut down (MoviePass claimed that e-ticketing was still working). Now we know why. MoviePass ran out of cash and didn't make a required payment and it got shut down.
MoviePass was able to secure a $5M emergency loan (who would lend them money at this point?) to get operations running again:

It's Thursday. Not Friday. MI6 opens today, surge pricing for all showings expected of course. What no one expected is that almost all movies, even ones that have been out for more than a week, are showing surge pricing starting in the early afternoon. In the Bay Area the surge price is $6 for all showings! On a Thursday.
Even the savvy MP users on reddit are shocked; people on twitter are cancelling or threatening to cancel. And that's the problem. MoviePass is depending on subscriber count to flex its power and are telling investors they will have 5M subscribers by the end of the year. But they've pushed it too far, and I can easily see their subscriber growth taking a huge hit unless they back off. If they don't continue to show healthy subscriber growth I think they're going to die sooner than later.

I've highlighted a few choice posts:
How about $6 surge pricing on a $5 matinee ticket?

I just posted about this in the other thread. Paid 5 bucks for a 10 dollar ticket to a showing at 11:30 pm in a empty theater

Probably. MoviePass's upcoming death shouldn't be a shock to anybody.

On the bright side, the weekly "moviepass on its last legs/dying" threads will come to an end

But the weekly “when will the weekly ‘movie pass is dying threads’ end” threads are just beginning

Seriously, every time someone gets pissed at MoviePass they start a new fricking thread.

it will die and then AMC will raise the price of its sub service by $10-15

I’ve seen better subscription services in the quad
In all seriousness though, I’ve never paid surge pricing and I use MoviePass quite a lot. You just have to bite the bullet and see that 37% on RT by the books action flick Mondays at 7 pm rather than Friday or Saturday at 7 pm

I bought the yearly plan when it was available so I'm grandfathered in with no surge pricing until December. I've been using more often than lately to take advantage before it changes.

Used it recently? I looked today out of curiosity around 1pm and every half decent movie had surge pricing.
1pm. On a Thursday.

I'm sure they will tweak the surge pricing over time

$6 in the By Area sounds like deal to me on any day

I just tried to see Unfriended because it wasn't surge priced. Check-in was a little buggy, but then it showed the proper screen to verify purchase. But the MP card got declined. Everyone in line (about six people) had MoviePass and all had their card declined. We gave up. I checked reddit and it's a system-wide issue. It looks like MoviePass is saying it's a problem with the processor, not MoviePass.
Maybe Mastercard is afraid MoviePass won't be able to pay its bills.
More indications that they could be in trouble...

Movie pass was created to hook people like me who only see a handful of movies a year. But there are not enough good movies for me to pay 9.99 a month to only go to a few movies, or to go see movies I'd usually skip. The people who have movie pass and are going to the movies all the time are actually killing movie pass.

Where are movie tickets so cheap for you? I make my money back with one matinee ticket

I was talking about the $9.99 a month fee by Movie Pass. I'm just saying that there are several months a year that I don't go see any movies and I'd still be having to pay a monthly fee. Around 2008-2010 I noticed many less films per year that I wanted to see in a theater. This was also around the time that the super hero movies took over and I'm not really into that stuff. And I personally don't see the point of going to see movies I don't really wanna see or I am on the fence about, just because I (in this example would be paying $9.99 a month for Movie Pass).
It's the 'sunken-cost'fallacy. Like if someone bought tickets to a Dodgers game that was on a Tuesday night and then someone they liked from work asked them to go out on Tuesday night because they were gonna be busy the rest of the week. The person who has the Dodgers tickets might say, 'Well I better go to the game or I spent $50 on a Dodgers ticket for nothing.' But the money for the ticket is already spent, whether they go to the game or not. Then it's not about the money, it's an opportunity cost trying to decide whether to get drinks with the cute coworker or to go to the Dodgers game. So because the $9.99 is spent monthly anyway, no one should feel compelled to see a bad movie just to feel they get their money's worth.
But Movie Pass was designed to get people who don't go to a lot of movies to go to a few more movies. The problem is that people who go to a lot of movies anyway are getting Movie Pass and going to even more movies. While this is happening, not many people like me are getting Movie Pass and so the people going to a shite ton of movies are killing it. But I don't blame them for going to a lot of movies.
It was a horrible business model from the start and unless a significant number of people who only go to a few movies a year, are willing to get it, and not use it very often, then it cannot sustain much longer without investors putting up capital.

I mean I’m not sitting here forcing myself to see movies to get my money’s worth. Literally one movie a month would put you ahead on movie going cost. Even if you skip a month and catch two movies the next month it’s well worth it, which I do often.
It’s simply a convenience and a great deal. I hardly ever watch Hulu either but it doesn’t bother me that I pay 10 dollars for that. It’s 10 dollars who cares
