Being a Boomer, there was a time when you could go to a lot of movies because they were cheap enough that you could role the dice to see if it was any good.

Dollar cinemas used to be great for this. I don't know how many movies we as you say rolled the dice on at the old dollar cinema before they tore it down.

When I was a kid and a teen sometimes me and my buddies would watch 2-3 movies on a Friday or Saturday because it was cheap

Much sooner than that. It's the only thing COVID actually killed.

I think we will see them drastically increase the amount of re-releases and anniversary releases. Revenge of the Sith’s anniversary week made more than Warfare’s entire box office run. Interstellar did great only in IMAX screens. There are so many classic movies I would love to see on the big screen for the first time.

family of 4 can easily drop $100 to go see a film (with concessions) and that isn't particularly new.
So... less than it costs to take that same family out to dinner?

For the longest time movie theaters had sound and screen as their main draws. This is why people were willing to pay more for food and sit with a bunch of people they didn't know.

It really is this simple. Same thing that happened to arcades when home systems caught up.

It's the prices. I haven't been to a movie at a theatre in about 7 years. The only only movie I can see myself wanting to see in the theatre is Dune 3. It doesn't help that movies come out so quick on streaming either. The fact is that they no longer make good movies. That I want to see at least.

but being in a theater with a big screen is different.

And also more expensive.

Sure.

But then you have to remember some families go out to eat before they go to the theater. So dad ends up dropping $200 or more that night just for dinner and a movie.

Having 25-30 minutes worth of commercials and previews be the movie starts is an issue, too.

I went to How to Train Your Dragon in IMax with my boy last week and it took me back to the good old days. However, it was pricey and the fat slobs walking in late with their $100 concessions pissed me off.

Once those idiots sat down though, man it was nostalgia overload because I hadn’t been to a theater since Top Gun Maverick. I used to go to the theaters all the damn time, I’d be the only guy in there sometimes cause I’d wait for a midweek matinee 3 weeks after release.

There is still a place for theater movies but man hollywood has to do so much better. It’s on them.

It's gotten too damn expensive. We went to see Lilo & Stitch 3 weeks ago and IIRC we dropped close to $60.,

They are going to have to adapt. You very possibly could see more drive-in type places that have less overhead and thus, pass those savings onto the customer. We have a drive-in here in Atlanta.(Starlight)

Matinee ticket for F1 was 9.50 today

For a 2.5 hour movie

Solid bang for the buck

I'm 41 and haven't been to the movies in 20 years. Do not miss it one bit.

The problem is that they release movies way too fast after the theater.

They need go back to the 90 day rule where after a movie premiers in the theater, a streaming service cannot pick it up after 90 days or whatever amount of days they come up with

Ding ding ding
The rush to streaming is just horrible. If I'm not able to see something in the first week or two of release, it's easy to just wait another few weeks and catch it on HBO Max or whatever.
I think the streaming model is really broken. They're spending a fortune to constantly crank out content so people don't drop Netflix, HBO Max, Disney+, etc. If people start cutting back on subscriptions in order to save a few bucks, those folks are screwed.
