What? 75% of the cast of BOB was from Great Britain. It was filmed in England for the most part.
Quite a few soon-to-be big name British actors were in BoB
Simon Pegg, Michael Fassbender, and Tom Hardy come to mind

Has anyone read the book? Should you read the book before watching series?
Really enjoyed the first two episodes - not fair to compare it to BOB and I’m trying not too. Just excited to have a WWII miniseries out that I’m looking forward to watching. Gosh I can’t imagine the feeling of being up there and the flak coming at you. Would guess it’s a similar situation to being shelled on the ground - just sheer helplessness.

Maybe its just because I am older but the casting really makes it feel like they are 18,19,20, and 21 year olds. With BoB and Pacific everyone felt old, they really feel like kids in this one.

I agree with this. Glad they went this route vs. what they did with BOB. I was shocked when I looked into each character in BOB and realized just how young everyone was in real life.

Excellent book as well as his Revisionist History podcasts on the same subject. It is three episodes I am pretty sure were in the 2021 season.
I'll have to read it, but I have soured on Gladwell ever since the debate. Woof, made me question everything he's done.

James McAvoy as well.

Haven’t started the show yet. But this thread makes me feel a little disappointed. Band of Brothers and The Pacific were damn near perfect and juxtapose each other so well but still feel like they’re similar.
But so far, based on the comments, it doesn’t feel like this one shares any resemblance of the other two, which is disappointing.

How does Apple do their shows? once/week or all at once?
Posted on 1/29/24 at 3:06 pm to TTU97NI
they dropped two episodes last week and one episode a week with nine total

You admitted that BoB and Pacific were almost perfect. Masters is just different and if it is half as good as those two it will be an amazing series. Those stories had a natural progression that was tailored for story telling, the air war doesn't seem to lend it self to story telling as easily.

The damage on the planes, which is all CGI, is frankly terrible. Do they know B17s are made of aluminum?
I've been mildly disappointed so far with the overall show.
It's not pulling me in at all.

I watched the first episode last night. The guy playing Buck is the actor who played Elvis and he has the Elvis voice. I can’t unhear that.
I think what made BoB great was they had the real life men talking before each episode. What they saw that pertained to that episode. Also you saw them forming together from training thru the D-Day invasion and to the end.
So far you only see 2 people who know each other but no real backstory. I’ll watch the second episode tonight and hopefully a little better. I had no real expectations for this series anyway.

I think they might have cussed less than you think. I know Dick Winters took them to task over the original script of Band of Brothers because he said they didn’t talk like that. He said when you live that close to death a lot of guys play it pretty straight. I’m not saying it was all golly gee in WWII but I’m not sure it was a Dave Chapelle routine either.
I know the general consensus is that wartime/military language has always matched our crudest offerings, but I'm just not sure it's as across the board as we make it (or would have been in the 30s/40s).
I always think of the NJ video of the second plane hitting on 9/11 (I believe it was on a ferry board or similar) and the reactions of those in the video. It is astounding. "Oh my gosh" "Oh goodness" "oh no!" etc. And those are NYers/NJ types only a couple of decades ago.
In 2023 it would be "holy S***" "What the f***!" "F*** me" etc.

The most disappointing aspect for me (through two eps) are the two leads. Butler is corny as hell and Bucky is very unlikeable. The only worthwhile character is Barry Keoghan’s and even his dialog is weak.
I’ll watch till the end but it’s clear this won’t sniff BoB or the Pacific.

Certainly some valid criticisms.
The CGI fighter runs at hyper speed in Ep 1 turned me right off. BF109s are not F14s in Top Gun. Even with closing speeds of both aircraft taken into account, it was way off. Memphis Belle was perfect with the fighters, I got the see that movie with a B17 gunner. I would guess that to be mandatory watch for anyone animating a movie about B17s over Germany....or not.

Yes, it's excellent. I don't know that there's any reason to read the book first. Hell, you may be disappointed in the movie for leaving out details. I read American Prometheus before seeing Oppenheimer and to an extent I wish I'd seen the movie first, and then read the book to flesh out the story.

I have a question I’m watching episode 1: is this going to be one central storyline and will we see fighter pilots or is it all bomber squadrons ?
Posted on 1/31/24 at 10:26 pm to tigerfan24736
It’s only been two episodes, but it feels like a made up Hollywood movie, not a docuseries based on real people and events.
Band of brothers felt like it captured the reality of the people and the events, and wasn’t some Hollywood make believe story.
