She is a plot device and not a lead character.
So pretty much her role in the show, which makes me question why the hell she's the lead. At the very least Spider-Woman would make more sense and she’s in this too

n the Sony-verse we have Venom, Carnage, Kraven, Morbius, Madame Web, and Spider-Woman but no Spider-Man
That would be like having a Legion of Doom movie with no Justice League.

Kind of depends on the scale of frick ups, I guess.
Morbius bombed but no one had high expectations for it.
It wasn’t, say, Batman And Robin, which had a very recognizable cast and was just fricking putrid to the point where it killed the series for almost a decade.

Venom had an antihero run of his own in the 90s, so that at least makes some form of sense. Morbius had a similar run but was nowhere near as popular.
Carnage and Kraven? WHY?
Carnage was basically the 90s personified and helped turn Venom from full on a-hole to antihero who had an uneasy relationship with Spidey.
Kraven? His most significant story is Kraven’s Last Hunt, which ended with him dead for decades. It made him very interesting and gave him some mystique but it was also something they weren’t really able to follow up on until he was revived against his wishes down the road, pissed off at his family for bringing him back.

No. The Eternals was bad. The Marvels is bad. I can’t put into words what this is.

Caveat: I made this looking at the end card for the trailer and presuming it was a Marvel product, missing that it was a Sony release. So take those points with a grain of salt.
So a bit of background:
The original Madame Web:
She died a while back during the Grim Hunt story arc (a REALLY good one, that involved Kraven's family), and one of the Spider-Women, Julie Carpenter:
Who was originally introduced in the Secret Wars storyline (the 12-parter with the Beyonder back in the 80s) was given her powers (the big one being precognition - seeing the future).
It appears that one actress is listed as Julie Carpenter (Sydney Sweeney - the blond, but the redhead in the trailer), and another is listed as Madame Web (Dakota Johnson).
Ezekiel was a man with the same powers as Spider-Man, who got them through a more arcane ritual. He wasn't evil in the comics, but rather morally gray (he was unwilling to confront Morlun, a very powerful Spider-Man enemy, who feasted on totem-based super heroes). He did, eventually, sacrifice himself to try and save Peter from Morlun and died, so using him as the villain instead of Morlun seems weird (unless the story ends up being way more complex than the trailer is implying).
The other women in the story are likely ones we've seen before in the comics.
Emma Roberts is listed as "Mary Parker"; the only "Mary" Parker was Peter's mom; there is a "Ben Parker" listed, who would be his Uncle Ben, so I'm not sure if this will be for flashbacks or what. Probably used to tie this in to a future Spider-Man movie.
Anya Corazon (Isabela Merced) has had the superhero names Araña and Spider-Girl.
Mattie Franklin (Celeste O'Connor) was a Spider-Woman, but her stint in the comics was not very long lived.
Interestingly enough, Jessica Drew (the most iconic Spider-Woman) has yet to appear in the MCU. The biggest comic storyarc that involved her was Secret War (the one with the Skrull Invasion) where it turned out she had been kidnapped and replaced with the Skrull leader years ago. That she didn't come out for the MCU D+ series nor appears to be in this film seems to imply that Sony probably owns the rights to her (or so I presumed, but a quick search seems to imply that Sony instead owns the rights to Julia Carpenter, who is in this movie, so I dunno)

Main thing I remember Mattie Franklin from was the Alias run where Jessica Jones ended up running across her and finding out she was being farmed by her supposed boyfriend to make Mutant Growth Hormone, which is basically superhero steroids.
She has some connection to J Jonah Jameson, so Jones ended up getting work with the Bugle after the case as a thank you from him.

There have been several adaptations of Secret Invasion and a different hero has been used as either the person impersonated by Veranke or the supposed mouthpiece of the Skrulls to the public.
The Avengers - World’s Mightiest Heroes adaptation had Veranke impersonate a different hero and had a long arc in which Cap was replaced by a Skrull then used as the mouthpiece when the invasion happened.

That is a “dump month” unless something is considered a date movie.
Deadpool is the exception, not the rule, when it comes to success at that time.
