The family should only sell rights to companies who agree that the Tolkien estate has absolute casting, showrruner, and story outline control of the property.

Thats the only way to prevent it from becoming an abomination. The family has all the leverage here.

That sounds noble, and I'd wish they would do that. But the fact is, "grandpa" wrote something that you could either hover over and continuously employ lawyers to piece out bit by bit, or you could sign the Lucas deal and become billionaires, and own some private first-run copies as heirlooms.

It hasn't happened yet, and perhaps never will, but at some point there may be another property that supplants it in the pecking order. If that happens and the family HASN'T cashed in, there will be some pissed offspring.

The family should sell to a true believer in the work, but they won't.

The family has not owned the rights to LOTR or the Hobbit since 1966.

Through Tolkien Enterprises, now Middle-earth Enterprises, Saul Zaentz owned the worldwide film, stage, and merchandise rights to J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.[15] It also includes "matching rights" should Tolkien's estate film The Silmarillion or The Unfinished Tales of Numenor and Middle-Earth.[16] What it did not include was the rights for televisions shows (for any show longer than eight episodes)

quote:

Middle-earth Enterprises, formerly known as Tolkien Enterprises, is a trade name for a division of The Saul Zaentz Company, located in Berkeley, California. The company owns the worldwide exclusive rights to certain elements of J. R. R. Tolkien's two most famous literary works: The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. These elements include the names of characters contained within as well as the names of places, objects and events within them, and certain short phrases and sayings from the works.

Tolkien sold away any chance for the family to receive a fortune associated with the movies over 50 years ago. Their foundation will receive some money from it.

Now that Christopher Tolkien has passed his father's work is about to get mutilated by hollywood all for the almighty dollar.

True, but the works remain. They are as against everything Hollywood stands for as any series out there.

You do realize that no matter who buys it and no matter how many movies and games they make, you aren’t required to view or play them right? It won’t change his original works nor the movie series from 01-03.

Y’all melt about anything these days.

You just described “The Witcher 3”

You can bang hookers, bang hot witches, kill monsters, collude with or take down medieval mobsters, play cards, participate in boxing tournaments, and slaughter tons of random people.

And yes, it’s arguably the best RPG of its era.

Also, The Witcher show on Netflix is pretty solid.

Best RPG I've ever played.

Besides Witcher 3, which is without a doubt the best game ever made, check out shadow of mordor and Shadow of war. They are pretty cool and based in Middle Earth.

The only LOTR game I've played is the one that was on the old Game Cube. I loved it.

It's got to be on CGI and sets. That's all I can guess, because, as you pointed out, not a single thing about those photos scream quality and high cinema in the slightest. They look like a fanfilm made for $16k.

Another gigantic problem I can see is that they have no name actors at all to market. GoT had Sean Bean to stable the show in its infancy. This looks like none of that.

It’s gonna be so sad when they remake LOTR in 5 years and the remakes suck and ruin the legacy of the current trilogy

'Dark elves' doesn't mean what they think it means.

It's not about skin color. It's not about good or evil.

Those who read the books know. This has zero to do with what Tolkien wrote, or ever wanted. Because he fleshed out his world unlike any other has before or since.

If these people hate whiteness so damn much, why are they trying to culturally appropriate white culture?

Think about it.

Black Panther had a story to tell.

So did Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Neither NEEDED to interject or invent new characters from other cultures to be fantastically interesting in their own right.

But Tolkien?

All of this.
