‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘The Hobbit’ Film and Gaming Rights Up for Sale

Hollywood is about to stampede into Middle Earth. An array of movie, merchandising, gaming and live event rights to “Lord of the Rings,” “The Hobbit” and other titles from author J.R.R. Tolkien are coming up for auction now that the Saul Zaentz Co. has decided to sell its Tolkien holdings.
Zaentz Co. has hired ACF Investment Bank to handle the sale process, which is unfolding this week as bankers make the rounds of the logical Hollywood buyers. The Tolkien properties are projected to fetch at least $2 billion, based on recent high valuations for top-tier IP and content producers.
The timing of the sale process is not accidental. Amazon is set to premiere its long-awaited, mega-budgeted TV series rendition of the enduring “Lord of the Rings” saga, “Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” on Sept. 2. Amazon is at the top of the list of prime candidates to pursue the additional rights now held by Zaentz.
The Zaentz Co. holdings encompass rights to exploit “LOTR” and “The Hobbit” properties in film, video games, merchandising, live events and theme parks. It also includes limited matching rights should the Tolkien estate decide to make movies or other content based on two compilations of Tolkien writings that were published after his death in 1973: “The Silmarillion” and “The Unfinished Tales of Numenor and Middle-Earth.”

Always felt like a GTA style open mediaeval game would crush with LOTR or GOTs branding on it.

I assumed TNT already owned it.

I don't know if you'd call it "GTA style," but there are several open world LOTR games I believe.

They are never as open world as I want. Just let me be a Knight fricking around in Westeros on the kings road

I've never played them. Are they less open world than the Elder Scrolls games? Could definitely get behind a LOTR or GOT game that is that immersive and free-ranging.

You just described “The Witcher 3”
You can bang hookers, bang hot witches, kill monsters, collude with or take down medieval mobsters, play cards, participate in boxing tournaments, and slaughter tons of random people.
And yes, it’s arguably the best RPG of its era.
Also, The Witcher show on Netflix is pretty solid.

Who even could buy it? Let’s look at the factions of franchises right now:
Disney has Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean, Indiana Jones, and Marvel
Paramount has Star Trek, Twilight,
Netflix has The Witcher
Warner has DC, Game of Thrones, and Harry Potter
Amazon has Wheel of Time and an upcoming LOTR series.

Goodnight sweet prince....
Every Tolkien work is about to get destroyed. The family should sell to a true believer in the work, but they won't. They'll sell to Disney or Amazon... Who will then deface and destroy everything good and righteous about this most protected property.
I can't stomach what is going to happen to it...
I wish some unknown super fan billionaire would buy the rights and do right by everything, but we all know that won't happen.

Basically, Skyrim.
Yes, LOTR would make an awesome Dragon Age/Skyrim type game.
I'm afraid Game of Thrones is too damaged now.

Yeah I’ve played Witcher and love the show. I get your point there, I think that is all the more reason to do that with the bigger IP properties as well given the success of Witcher

What ever happened with the rumor from a while back that Universal got the LOTR theme park rights? If thats true, then seems like they’d probably be very interested in buying up more media and merchandising rights

I’d love a new BFME game
That would be great. Elves as medics, hobbits as recon, dwarves for support, humans for assault.
Although a GoT themed COD has potential. Drogon/Viserion strafing run as a killstreak.

The Lord of the Rings Online was (is) a ridiculously stable game that still plays well. It is also badly out of date and has a fairly cheesy game control system.
The question is has the ground lain fallow long enough for a LoTR movie reboot? Because the current trilogy holds up just fine thank you. Someone is going to nibble, because if you get a hot hand you can make billions, but is the time right for rolling the dice in that regard?
Also congrats to the Tolkien family. JRR Tolkien was dirt poor when he was young, scraped by on a less than generous salary as a professor, and now his estate is on the verge of becoming billionaires.

Yeah that already happened wThe Hobbit under his watch.

Didn't Jackson and New Line Cinema get the rights to both LOTR and the Hobbit when they family made the original deal?
Could be wrong, but I thought that was why and how The Hobbit was even made.
I think Christopher was none too happy with any of it, honestly, even the LOTR films, and that's why the rights to Amazon were sold after his death. I don't think he would have ever licensed the rights to any of his father's works again if he had lived 100 more years.

quote:The Hobbit happened, but it bothered Christopher Tolkien so much that he shut them down. I seem to remember reading that he despised that trilogy, said it was a mistake, and that it would not be allowed to happen again under his watch. As in, no more rights granted.quote:

I think there's some pretty strict conditions on the upcoming Amazon series, placed in the contract.
