And how many of those knew they were going to rate it that before they even saw it? And most probably didn’t.

Review bombing and review boosting have made audience scores nearly as useless as critic scores.

My daughter wanted to see it. So we did. Thought it was one of Disney's better live action remakes. Jungle Book still tops

Cinderella was the best. Done before they made a huge production out of them.

But I highly doubt they'll actually lose money on it.
They will. Marketing was up to $300 mil because they didn’t want this to look like a failure. Production costs with all of the post work was about $220 mil. It won’t get to 550 worldwide.

Marketing is not part of the budget. That's a myth that needs to die off. Marketing costs are a completely different bucket, paid for by licensing deals and merchandise sales.

I didn’t say it was. Those deals won’t pay for the marketing of this film no matter how many times she’s on TV or how many black actors they put in the parks. For most little girls, she won’t be the real Ariel.

It's part of the overall expenditures and is always factored into whether or not a movie is profitable.

No it isn't.

My daughter saw it. She’s 3 and really enjoyed it. I didn’t see it, but if she liked it, cool.

$250 Million, and I honestly don't where the money went.

But, even using a conservative 2.5x multiplier, it still has to break $600 Million globally to break even.

It won't come close to that. They are going to follow it up with another flop with Indiana Jones DOD. Elemental is projecting to have one of the worst openings in Pixar history. MCU is Dead, the Marvels will likely be the first MCU theatrical release that will lose money. Star Wars is dying a slow painful death.

All this after 2022's epic failures:

Lightyear lost $106 Million
Amsterdam lost $108.7 Million
Strange World lost $197.4 million

But James Cameron isn't here to save them in 2023, glad I don't own Disney stock anymore.

I think it’s dumb they made little mermaid black

Having said that, this was one of the best, if not the best, Disney live action remake. It was too long, but the visuals were great and slight adjustments to make it “real” were done well

Ready to be flamed by people who didn’t see it

ETA: and the mixed races of all the daughters was actually handled well and “made sense”. His daughters were described as “of the 7 seas”

So being different races holds some sense

Friend,

The article I read tonight stated that this movie is supposed to bring in $120-150 million this weekend alone, making it the second biggest Memorial Day opening in cinematic history.

I do not know about the rest of you, but I haven’t been this excited about a theater release since Never Say Never. Little Mermaid looks great! I would venture to say it will be better than the original.

Apparently Disney has been on the record since 1989 that the appropriate age for species reassignment procedures is 16 years old.

And even King Triton himself will agree that after the back alley procedure was performed without his consent, that once the minor truly finds their happiness as the opposite species, he accepts her decision and says he’ll miss his daughter but will always be here for her, even as she is a different species.

I thought this movie had a shot at 750 million WW but after seeing the international numbers after this weekend I'm having doubts now. Guardians 3 is under 750 WW right now and it had a bigger opening than LM and not as much surrounding competition. Where are we thinking this ends up?

Someone on Reddit made a good point when saying that people are trying REALLY hard to like this movie and are nitpicking it in a way to make themselves like it.

We shouldn't accept mediocre shite like this.

I've listened to some reviews of the movie, and they can be nit picky, but it goes way beyond race changes in characters. Seemingly small inconsequential changes disrupt the narrative of the movie.

One of the main themes in the original is the clashing of humankind and the mermaids and ocean world. Triton is very distrusting of humans. Part of what changes his mind is that Eric saves Ariel at the end when he kills Ursula. By switching roles and having Ariel "girl bossin'" and save Eric instead it completely changes that whole part of the story. It makes no sense. That's just one of many changes that disrupt the story.
