It made 22 million over the weekend, it blew all expectations out of the water.

A record for the Neon Studio.

Thinking on this some more and I wonder if there is any chance at all of another film? Not sure of it’s box office numbers. If they do get to make another film I hope they decide to do a prequel. I think finding out about LongLegs and his origin story would be much more interesting than any sequel they could try and force.
why does everything need a sequel!? Just let good films stay as it is!

Add me to the list of people who don't care for it, not even a little bit. That said, as soon as it was over I started thinking that they need to make a prequel to give a backstory on Longlegs.

Saw it tonight with the wife. Went in high expectations…Se7en, SOTL….left disappointed. I knew 20 minutes in it was headed in that direction. There’s really no bones, no great story, no great twist, no great direction. Hoping Cage in makeup can be Heath Leger’s Joker and satan explaining everything is no SOTL nor Se7en. 5 out of 10. 2 out of 4

I liked it a lot. Totally my genre. Agree about the terrific cinematography and wasn’t thrilled w the end.

I really liked this movie. Very well crafted. Amazing job with the tone of the film.

You will either like the tone or hate it. I loved it. She is not a Mary Sue. She's afraid but shows courage. Characterizing her as some sort of autist was also unfair. We're talking about a woman living in some form of spiritual limbo. She gazed into the eyes of the beast's emissary as a child. She's shown to be aware of the devil peering over her shoulder.

There's a lot of stuff to talk about from the details. The colors are used with serious intention IMO. Whites and Green. Brown and Red. And Black. Limbo. Light. Sin. Violence. Evil.

The ball inside the crafted dolls obviously bothers some viewers but not me. The dolls are supernatural or magical items carrying parts of Longlegs spirit. Their eyes can appear human and blue in the light but glow red with serpentine pupils in the darkness. They are portrayed as controlling the people in their proximity and Longlegs can see through them.

If you believe that supernatural series of things I don't stumble over a mysterious part of the doll. There's also a certain logic to the spherical shape of the balls being occult. The history of human religious belief attached special significance to the sphere shape (eg heavenly or otherworldly objects).

This post is long enough. I'll do another for additional thoughts.

Second post. Mostly about Longlegs

After some thinking I think there are interpretations the attentive viewers are intended to reach.

Here are a few things that lead me there.
- From the FBI discussions they make the comparison to Charles Manson. And the accomplices are referred to as his family. The only revealed accomplice is Lee's mother (singular).
- During the association slide show in the FBI testing Lee says "Father" specifically when the image of a triangle is flashed.
- The triangle completed is shown when Lee finds the pattern of killing to trace a Satanic sigil.
- The triangle shape (with a smiley face in the middle) is drawn on the piece of paper Lee finds (over the doll crafted and hidden under a cross).
- Is Longlegs itself a clue in plain sight? The only common vernacular associated with Longlegs is a Daddy Longlegs.
- Pains are taken to steer the viewer away from thinking about Lee's father.
- Lee is born on the 14th and the M.O. of the crimes is the father (under the control of Longlegs as an agent of the Devil) kills the family always including his daughter who was born on the 14th.
- It is also possible Lee had other siblings that were killed or still exist. When she calls her mother "Mom" her mother responds with a questioning "Lee?"

I honestly don’t know if I liked it or not. I def wouldn’t call it phenomenal. I was engaged throughout but didn’t find it be anything more than average.

Great insight. I really liked this movie, and will definitely do a rewatch when it gets to streaming. Loved the tone and imagery.

Not great, but I still enjoyed the hell out of it.

I enjoyed it. Good suspense. Wasn’t absurdly scary but good creep factor and suspenseful.

I went in completely blind so had no preconceived notions on it. Solid 7.5/10 IMO

Script felt like a rough draft with several areas that could've been tightened and tweaked

Beautiful, atmospheric, and well-directed movie though. Don't say this often but I will definitely watch it again. So many little "blink and you'll miss it" background moments.

Script keeps it from being a classic but I still really enjoyed myself. Great experience

Just got out of it, went in blind. Went in with high hopes but left with an it was ok feeling, nothing special. Surely not on the level with SOTL.

Spoiler below

A magical doll made people do the killings, give me a break.

This is actually a really good write up and gives the movie a little bump for me after the fact but man what a letdown it was. I thought it was legit going to be disturbing and creepy/scary. It felt like it was approaching it a few times but then just took a sharp turn to kill any momentum. 5/10

Yeah it really wasn’t that creepy, certainly not at the hype levels it got.

Sounds blasphemous but I thought nick cage was too over the top to take seriously and never felt that freaked out by him singing show tunes

For an FBI agent, the lead character is incredibly shakey in every moment of danger. Also not sure why they made her psychic in the first scene and then never bring it up again.

Then once the real plot / background is revealed it feels very convoluted and a little silly tbh.

It’s shot well I’ll give it that

just saw it. wtf i was all jazzed waiting to see what nick cage's character was going to look like and they revealed it 10 seconds into the movie. disappointing.

next, the ending was dumb double D dumb.

so she just stands there and watches shite go down? like it wasnt obvious from the first time she visits him that his family would be next in line?

and why didn't she shoot the dummy? just what? the bullets wouldn't fire? the gun was empty? what was that all about?

and then to just sit by while he's slashing his wife to pieces and do nothing.

she is no Clarise.

hated it.

I think the marketing hyped this film up a bit too much and that’s why folks weren’t completely left blown away.

I think if you try to make something out as being scary that really isn't, people will be disappointed, and there is still a large crowd that won't go see 'scary' movies in theaters at all.

Honestly... I went in thinking this movie was going to be great from the way it was being talked about.

Was trash.

Thanks. It's an interesting little film. If you somewhat dug this movie's tone but didn't dig the lack of real scares, I suggest checking out Oddity. It's very, very good.

Also, the director for Longlegs is quite an a-hole so I'll find it difficult to support his future films in any capacity. The most interesting part of Longlegs. to me, was the mystery of Longlegs, his connection to evil, and the cyphers he would leave behind. In an AMA with the director, he basically shite all over those aspects and said "basically I just wanted to tell a story about a girl and her mother. the cyphers, the evil, etc. that was all supposition." He was also extremely rude to his fans in ways I'll never understand, so basically, frick him even if he made an interesting film.

Anyway, check out Oddity. It's great and the better of the two films.
