Wait, Shang isn’t in this!?

I’m still very intrigued and will make the effort to see this one in theaters since I love Mulan. I haven’t seen a Disney live action film since Beauty and the Beast (thanks to the miscasting of Emma Watson).

Then make a different movie that isn't based on Disney musical cartoon.

That's basically the entire allure of the Disney animated films (the music)

The best live action remake was The Jungle Book one from the 90’s, and it didn’t have any of the music but was an awesome movie.

They're making a movie based on the story of Hua Mulan.

The Disney musical cartoon is not the source material for this movie. A 2,000 year old legend is the source material.

But this is Disney.

Who will be their target audience here?

Based on that video, it definitely isn’t children.

This is a Chinese martial arts movie, a genre which fell to the wayside 10+ years ago.

I’m actually really surprised by Disney here.

I guess their target is the Chinese audience?

That would make sense.

I can promise you, there will be hilarious angry rants by moms who bring their kids to this, thinking that it was a remake of the Disney cartoon.

That should be fun.

So when we get around to the live action remake for The Princess and the Frog, we can expect Tiana to be white, right?

Not in the movie. It's also not a musical

Isn't she supposed to pretend to be a dude?

In this adaptation everyone respects her for being a strong independent woman from the getgo

How old is your daughter?

I guess I’ll look forward to the resurgence of the Chinese martial arts genre in the young female demographic.

it looks almost like a super hero movie

with the success of WW and CM, I think its pretty obvious that young girls enjoy shows the portray girls/women kicking arse

People on this board bitch about the scene for scene remakes, and now Disney looks like they are going with a different direction with this remake, and people are still bitching.

The haters can suck it, that trailer looks awesome.

What?

People have bitched about making live action versions of these movies from the get go, but no one ever bitches about scene for scene remakes of Disney movies when they do make them.

It’s always the opposite. The bitching is because people change things.

With the Ariel thread, that should be blatantly obvious. People did it with Aladdin and they’ll do it with Lion King (if they change things).

I’m a little surprised by the reaction on this board. Mulan is set in the middle of a war where she is trained to fight. The risk was turning that into a kid’s movie, not the other way around. None of the live action adaptations have been exactly like the original animation either. The only one with a similar tone to its source material has been Cinderella. Maleficent, Jungle Book, Dumbo, Pete’s Dragon (more of a remake), Alice in Wonderland, and Beauty and the Beast all had much more serious plots. And some of those were barely PG. I have yet to see Aladdin and I don’t count 101 Dalmatians because that’s not really a part of this era of realistic adaptations.

Well, yea, I get that.

I’m just surprised that Disney went that route.
quote:

Maleficent
That isn’t Sleeping Beauty. That is a completely different movie.
quote:

Jungle Book
Which one?

There have been something like 8 remakes of that movie.
quote:

Dumbo
Not exactly the success everyone was hoping for.
quote:

Pete’s Dragon
Yea, that was a complete remake.
quote:

Alice in Wonderland
I’ll give you that one. The first one did fairly well too. The second, not so much.
quote:

Beauty and the Beast

That one isn’t terribly different in tone from the original. They are both pretty dark.
quote:

Aladdin
Pretty good actually. Wasn’t sure I would like Will Smith as Genie, but it wasn’t bad. I thought some of the changes were done poorly, like the forgettable “Speechless” song.

Look, this movie may be good. It may break records.

My prediction is that it will do poorly in the US. China will probably love it.

Maleficent is still considered an adaptation. I get that it’s a different story but it’s the same characters set at the same time.

The Jon Favrau Jungle Book. It was extremely dark compared to the original.

Dumbo wasn’t a success but that’s not what I’m talking about here.

Beauty and the Beast got PG in the US but just barely. Many other places had it rated higher. The mother’s backstory, the fighting, themes... will all be a little too real to match the tone of a cartoon.

I don’t really have a prediction yet but based on the trailer, I’m very interested. And let’s not forget that the kids who saw the originals are now adults. Maybe that’s the target audience here.

They better sing the "Let's get down to business, and defeat the Huns" song.
