Where the frick is Mushu and when did fricking Mulan become crouching tiger hidden dragon?

I’ve heard they cut all of the musical numbers out of it as well.

Not to mention from the preview, they’re making it seem like she was a warrior all along and didn’t pretend to be a guy. You know, the whole subtext of the animated film.

Looks like a dud waiting to happen

Mushu is being replaced by a Phoenix in this movie and they are suppose to be keeping it closer to the original story of Mulan and less of the Disney version of the story.

China is a big market, and the Chinese would probably appreciate a movie that is closer to the original Mulan story than the cartoon musical from the 90s.

The story of Mulan

She pretended to be a dude in the traditional/historical record

She pretended to be a dude in the animated movie.

Not anywhere in the trailer

Maybe they just didn't show it in the trailer?

Without that aspect, it is just "chick warrior goes to war"

Characters shown are from the cartoon. Off the top I saw the painted face chick who tried to teach her manners.

Pretty sure they did. But you got a lot of the second or maybe third act where she fights as a girl. Truth is, we know this won’t be exactly like the cartoon. They are never the same. But you have to be true to the original while making changes that make it worth the remake. It’s a fine line.

So what are the odds that this is the first Disney movie in which the protagonist kills herself to avoid becoming a concubine?

She'll fall in love with a woman.

That's the twist

What.....

So... It's not Mulan

It's just an Asian war flick with a girl named Mulan

ETA: oh my God it's true.

Much has already been made about how much this remake will deviate from Disney's original story. Various characters have been cut or swapped out for a similar figure, including Mulan's love interest Shang; Mushu the dragon won't appear (although allegedly, a phoenix will be in the film serving a similar role), and the final product will not be a musical.

Honestly, I'd prefer this. If it's an exact rehash of the animated version, why even take them?

Who wants to ban bet that the love interest will be a woman?

Why not make the Lion King the story of a boy and his dog having adventures in South Carolina?

I mean, we can call the boy Simba and the dog Nala

Will not watch.

I've already seen Mulan, and I like it.

Why? This is a massive part of the draw for Disney movies.

I’m fine with cutting out the music, the talking dragon, and the kiddie stuff to make it more of a war movie (I don’t see the point of making or watching a scene by scene remake) but I don’t feel the character of Mulan works without her love interest Shang.
