it does have the payoff of Michael Rappaport getting shot in the dick at least.

I actually think Season 5 wasn’t bad. It’s just bad compared to the other seasons. Rappaport was obviously the worst villain and his accent stunk, but I enjoyed the season overall.

Plus we got the classic Boyd line: “I’ve been accused of being a lot of things. Inarticulate ain’t one of them.” As he holds a pistol to Daryl’s face.

using "You'll Never Leave Harlen Alive" to end every season is just perfect--Best use of a song in tv history.

I think Badfinger's "Baby Blue" at the end of BB's series finale trumps that, IMHO.

Justified is great, the characters are great, and for action alone it's more rewatchable, but for me Breaking Bad is the superior series. It's like comparing The Godfather and Goodfellas, and I LOVE them both:
--Goodfellas--more action, more accessible.
--Godfather--deeper, more serious, superior.

Trust me, if you give Justified a chance you will not be disappointed

Ok, I'm 4 eps in. It's good, not great so far imo. Olyphant is awesome and what little I saw of Goggins was good and I know he obviously comes back later. Some of these scenarios are ridiculous, but I'm good to suspend disbelief and there's been some great and funny moments so I'll definitely keep watching. I have to at least give the rest of 1 and S2 a watch.

Yeah, that's a fair assessment of season 1. But I would be shocked if you don't think season 2 is great. I also think you'll like the season finale.

I mean, it's a tv show from a lower end cable network in FX, so if you're saying to yourself "wait, there's no way that would happen in real life", then you might be watching the wrong show.

ETA: I am curious what you thought of the opening scene of the pilot with Raylan and Tommy Bucks. I mean, that was a pretty bad arse opening scene, right?

I'm not an expert movie critique so I don't know if the writing, acting, production, etc. is technically better in Justified but I do know that I enjoyed it more than Breaking Bad and do like Breaking Bad.
It’s funny you say that. Breaking Bad is a great show but it’s not always enjoyable. Season 4 in particular is just brutal. There’s like an 8 episode stretch where every single character’s life gets progressively worse every episode.

Yeah that's definitely an opener and i always like a shootout. i just have to get used to this almost western style modern show. 24 hours to leave town, wtf is that But now a few eps in I get it and I'm settling in.

But I also like the fact that the shootout isn't just glossed over and forgotten as the show goes on like it's an every day thing that occurs. His boss in Miami ships him back to Kentucky over it, Art holds it over his head in subtle and not so subtle ways throughout the series, the Miami cartel doesn't let it go even after he's shipped back to Kentucky because a cartel can't just let one of their lieutenants be done like that in such a public way, and all throughout the series when criminals first meet Raylan they're like "did you really gun down Tommy Bucks cowboy style at a Miami restaurant in the middle of lunch?" as if it's kind of become an urban legend because of how ballsy someone would have to be to give someone 24 hours to leave town and then just shoot the guy down in the middle of lunch at a restaurant when the time was up . That opening scene has a lingering effect throughout the show, and especially in the first couple of seasons.

I mean, it seems to me the central idea in Breaking Bad is that decisions have consequences. So when all the characters are making bad decisions, it's going to be a bit of a downer and hard to watch the consequences play out. That is a feature, not a bug.

Boyd Crowder is a better charachter than anyone on BB but the overall cast of characters on BB is just too much to overcome.

But it's not like Justified's cast of characters are a bunch of slouches. You have Raylan, Boyd, Art, Tim, Duffy, Arlo, Dewey, & Judge Reardon who I think are some top notch main to recurring characters. And Winona >>>>>>>>> Skyler even though they both kind of served the same role on their respective shows.

The only area where Justified was inconsistent with their casting were some of the "big bads". You had characters like the Bennetts who were top notch, but then you had the likes of Darryl Crowe who was painful to even hear speak.
