I was looking for something new to watch and although war isn't typically my genre I have constantly heard forever how outstanding BOB is. When something gets that much universal praise it's usually pretty good so I watched ep 1 last night and am really enjoying it. Can't wait for the rest.

My only "thing" (it's certainly not a complaint or a nitpick at all so I don't know what else to call it) is the recognizable actors. I know they are portraying real men so they had to get someone to do it. But man I associate several of these dudes with other roles, the most obvious of course being the hardass dickhead drill sergeant, aka ross gellar. I can't take that guy seriously at all when he's busting everyone's chops. Every word of out of his mouth just makes me think of nothing but ross lol. Another one of the main dudes is the guy from office space so I kept waiting for him to just get bored and dip out at any second. And the guy from shaun of the dead makes an appearance too. It hasn't lessened my enjoyment of the show one iota just to be clear, just thought it was kinda funny when ross came on screen trying to intimidate everyone.

What’s funny is it came out 25 years ago and I recognize majority of these guys from being on Band of Brothers. I watched it when it came out so that makes a difference. This show made alot of these guys careers.

I'm jealous that you get to experience this for the first time. It's excellent. Second best TV series of all time for me.

Almost all of the actors except for David Schwimmer were unknown, many of them british actors because they filmed a lot of it in England

Also... he was not a drill sergeant. Did you pay attention? He was a Captain for the entire Company, an officer not an enlisted man

90% of the American public have absolutely no clue about the military or military culture. Things like rank structure or commissioned officers/enlisted men is Greek to them.

You salute the rank, not the man.

I went down a lot of rabbit holes on this show and watched some reaction videos.

Somewhat of a spoiler:

When one guy is given a battlefield commission, discharged as an enlisted man and promoted to an officer, there is mass confusion over this

I remember the rank because I've watched the series many, many times but...

myself included. He's a leader giving orders so I just called him a drill sergeant, sorry to the fun police for not identifying him correctly!

And good point about the year it came out, honestly until this thread I had no idea what year it came out but that definitely makes sense about a lot of these guys other than Ross not being known at the time.

And while we're on the topic I guess **NO SPOILERS OTHER THAN EPISODE 1 PLEASE** do we know how ross got to be in that position to begin with? He runs a tight ship I suppose, but he doesn't seem to be that competent. He isn't respected (and surely he has to know that), he makes tactical errors, gets lost multiple times...like how did he rise through the ranks to get there?

Schwimmer was great in that role. When he first popped up on screen I immediately thought of Ross too obviously, it'd be hard not to, but i got over that pretty quick and appreciated his character.

Band of Brothers came out before that fwiw.

Enjoy the rest of the ride. You can follow it up with The Pacific after, it's another great HBO WW2 mini series.

a ton of those actors were huge actors when they played roles.

Buckle up because I watch this yearly.

Welcome to the military (especifically during a time when they needed bodies to be in charge)

On a side note, i envy you getting to watch this for the first time...Pacific was great and in the same era, but if you want a more modern-day setting, I recommend Generation Kill as another solid watch

oh wow that's high praise!

Yeah I'm pumped. I've very casually (trying to avoid spoilers) seen other threads similar to this one where people just constantly talk about how elite it is. I'm excited to knock out another episode tonight.

You should check out the companion documentary when you finish the series

We Stand Alone Together: The Men of Easy Company

Pretty crazy to hear from those legends and a great documentary IMO

I'm in the minority, but I vastly preferred the Pacific to BoB.

Band is excellent. That's not to take anything away from it. It's also a cohesive story about a single company. But the Pacific is so much more visceral, difficult, and overall a challenging watch. Plus, the US was far more instrumental in the actual Pacific theater than it was in Europe, that the historical significance is deeper.

Spoilers:
The speech that the German captain gives his soldiers is so brilliantly well done, that it makes the entire series worthwhile. It really drove home that, while fighting each other, we had far more in common with the Germans as a people than we did with others. It's a recurring theme in BoB that I think they handle very well.

LINK

Here’s a link to the real Sobel. His legend mainly came from the book/show. I think a good bit of Easy Company regrets talking about him the way they did reflecting on it years later. This was in a book called The Untold Stories of Band of Brothers by Marcus Brotherton. Great read for those wanting more after the story.

He was hated but turned them into the very best. The soldiers would all agree with that sentiment
