Avatar makes a shite load of money and then no one talks about them.

They're very pretty movies and the technical advances he pushes through these vehicles are great...but these movies somehow both suck and blow at the same time.

I saw the Pochhontas v1 avatar and have not watched a single other one, the entire series is kind of trash.

Not only that, but I've not known a single person that has seen any of the sequels in real life. I knew a bunch way back for the original because of the effects and cutting edge stuff. But there is virtually no cultural footprint. I'm bewildered how the second made as much money as it did. I didn't think anyone was asking for them.

Avatar was great for pushing the boundaries of visuals but he can't really do that anymore so give us something else.

Avatar is the most bizarre thing ever. The first film was the highest grossing film of all time. As soon as it was gone, no one cared. It had no cultural impact, it was not in the zeitgeist. No one thought about it

Because the story and themes are from a completely different era of politics and social commentary. His entire series is based off boomer political issues and its rather dull and overdone at this stage.

Just my opinion, but I think a large part has to do with the fact that it's difficult to connect with any of the characters on a personal level. I saw the first one a year or two after it came out and have since watched the sequels with my kids. I couldn't name a single character and neither could my kids. It's an average story with fantastic visuals, but you really don't feel any connection to the characters. The plot is not interesting enough to make a lasting impact on adult viewers and the characters are not relatable enough to make a lasting impact on younger viewers.

That said, I saw the original in the theater 3 or 4 times but didn't see the sequels there. I sat down to watch the newest one and turned it off 5 minutes in. If I want to watch anime, I'm sure there are much better stories. If I want to see Zoe Saldaña act I'll watch Lioness or any one of her good movies. It's a shame Sam Worthington hasn't benefited professionally from leading the franchise.

And I'm not saying you're wrong either. But you've only seen the first one.
The first one was pretty good for what it was (i.e. story came second to the technicalogical aspects of the movie). And it sure was fricking pretty and a cool theater experience at the time. I watched the second one like six months ago and don't remember much about it. It did also look very nice though, and I suspect the third one does too (though I haven't seen that one yet). I also had no idea Cameron was slated for TWO (!) more Avatar movies. Yikes.
But for all of Avatar's bullshite, I appreciate the frick out James Cameron for everything he's done for movies, and for the sheer amount of effort he puts into them. That dude gives a shite, and it shows. Would be nice if there were more movie makers like that these days. I look forward to whatever he decides to do next.

It’s so strange, I never had a desire to even see the last two and they make bank. And you’re right, I haven’t heard a peep about those movies since they came out.

The visuals on all the movies are amazing, but the trope is played out.
The first one is like a blend of Dune and Pocahontas. Colonizers come to peaceful planet to extract resources with their modern weapons and indiscriminately destroy the land. Marine turns into messiah like figure after he rides the biggest dragon, uniting all the clans against the colonizers and they quasi worship him because he rode the biggest dragon
I watched the second one but can't even remember the plot, just that it involved water.
Third one had a lot of demonic/religious parallels. The whole talking whales thing just completely jumped the shark though and was corny as shite. All the while you've got a main villain that's just a caricature of a drill sergeant that's being set up the whole time for a redemption arc where he flips sides
