I do pretty regularly actually. Usually while I'm cooking, I'll cut YouTube on my tv and just let it play straight non-stop music videos.

But you right, most people probably don't do this.

The best day of Rob Dyrdek’s life was when he walked into the MTV offices for the first time.

When Dyrdek was a kid, and landed his first ollie, did he think he'd one day run MTV?

I'd be willing to bet there is some sort of research that suggests a majority of their viewership comes in quick bits of people catching Ridiculousness, which has mass appeal and is mindless, perfect for the short attention spans of their viewers.

Cruel joke that the MTV from his childhood wish turned into an abandoned amusement park that he skates through, alone with no audience to witness or applaud him.

MTV still tries to have music in some ways. In shows like Jersey Shore or Teen Mom when they play a background song the artist and song title are usually in one of the lower corners of the screen.

That’s about as tight as they are holding on to the M part of MTV.

Same. I put on music videos a lot when I’m cooking, getting ready for work, doing chores, etc.

If I want to watch certain music videos like Metallica's "One" video, I'll watch it on YouTube. The problem with music videos in general is that they became cookie-cutter promotional shorts for bubblegum pops songs in the late 90s. They became throwaway parts of pop culture. People lost interest in them.

downloading music and then streaming is what truly killed them

They were once great promotional vehicles to have you run out and buy a CD for $20 that had maybe 2-3 good songs on it. Once people could buy the song for .99 or even free, that era was over.

I'm sure we all enjoyed This Racist Commercial (youtube) where a bunch of gayz and POC put us in our collective place.

How could you have possibly found that?

I'm sure there's a lot of truth to this. Still, I don't know why MTV couldn't at least have a day or two of programming with stuff from their archives.

Unless they no longer own the rights to these shows, I'd bet people would watch old episodes of Beavis & Butthead, Daria, Jackass, or Wildboyz. Hell, they could at least do a night of old Unplugged concerts or MTV News documentaries, which were pretty good. Some of the old Spring Break stuff was hilarious as well.

Maybe it has something to do with royalties or who knows

But Comedy Central and MTV both have big vaults they do nothing with.

The commercial is so vile and insulting, how could I have forgotten it?

This. MTV’s catalog is ridiculously huge, I’m not sure why they don’t feature anything besides rob dyrdek.

At the very least run old episodes of Jersey shore, teen mom or the challenge, since these shows are still in production.

This is a good point. I’m sure mtv still owns the rights to their old shows, but almost every show has featured popular music and they probably don’t want to pay royalties on some 20 year old song on a show that’s going to garner less than 50,000 viewers.
