I never saw The Hurt Locker because I had the whole movie spoiled for me.

Long story short basically a week after it came out two friends could’ve stop talking and essentially talked me through the whole film. Since then I never bothered seeing it, I feel like I missed out, should I watch it now?

I liked it, but then I think Jeremy Renner is pretty decent in most stuff.

Damn, movie came out in 2008.

I didn't come out until the summer of '09 in the United States.

It was directed by Kathryn Bigelow, who won best picture and best director. She beat out her ex husband, James Cameron (Avatar) for both awards.

The Hurt Locker premiered at the 2008 Venice International Film Festival and was released in the United States on June 26, 2009, by Summit Entertainment.

Very well.

I still liked it.

It's a bad movie.

Turned EOD guys into cowboys. Seemed like more of a formulaic Hollywood movie instead of really having much to say about soldiers in Iraq.

Generation Kill was way better IMO.

It's probably entertaining enough if you don't know much about the military. It's not a bad movie but it's laughably inaccurate when it comes to portraying what it's like.

I thought you had to be wrong but I don't keep up with that stuff. Freaking movie won 6 Oscars. That's .... odd.

If you served in Iraq, avoid it. It’s all kinds of absurdities.

For those of us that didn't go to Iraq, care to expand on some of the absurdities? I have 0 doubt there are absurdities, but I'm always curious what battlefield life is actually like.

Have a buddy that served in Iraq and some of the stories he tells are pretty nuts. Apparently he was one of the first marines to cruise into Iraq.

I didn't serve in Iraq either, but from previous conversations its the little nuances that make it frustrating. Its kinda like when I see a deer hunting scene in a movie or a show set in South Louisiana.

The place where they filmed all the village scenes is a Jordanian military base that I was deployed to for a year.

That's all I got.

Oh, and the King of Jordan is pretty cool and his wife is a smoke show.

I don't remember specifically why, but I remember watching this movie years ago and absolutely hating it.

Veterans hate it because apparently it's highly unrealistic.

But us non-veterans loved it because it's intense as shite and very entertaining. Cinematography is good and Renner is a good actor.

So if you can handle the plot, then you'll like it. Turn up the volume and watch in a dark room.

Uniform wear.
Wrong uniform.
Sleeves rolled up.
Incorrect patch wear.
Popped collar, what the frick?
No overwatch or support during route clearance missions.
EOD aren’t snipers or infantry.
3 man EOD team doesn’t do presence patrols/force projection.
James is reckless and would be pulled from that unit immediately.
Lack of safety procedures putting his whole team at risk.
Assaulting your NCO.

I can go on if you want.

and at the time it was heralded as this super accurate War on Terror film. i remember watching it as a lieutenant, even before i went on my first ME deployment, and thinking "no way it's like this". turns out i was right.

that said, a lot of it was filmed at the JTC in Jordan and does a pretty good job of capturing the overall feel of the middle east and Iraq, so that was cool.

it's been years since i saw it, but the thing that sticks out in my memory was a scene where Renner is out by himself running around in the town for some reason. that is unrealistic to an absurd level.
