… and honestly enjoyed every last one. He’s obviously a great director, but to not have a single bad film across an entire career so far is pretty impressive.

Film - IMDB Rating - My Rating

August 32nd on Earth - 6.5 - 7
Maelström - 6.7 - 6
Polytechnique - 7.2 - 8
Incendies - 8.3 - 9
Prisoners - 8.2 - 8
Enemy - 6.9 - 7
Sicario - 7.7 - 8
Arrival - 7.9 - 8
Blade Runner 2049 - 8.0 - 8
Dune - 8.0 - 8
Dune: Part Two - 8.5 - 9

Average - 7.6 - 7.8

One of the best in the game

He’s that level of “ if he’s directing it, you know it’s gonna be really good”. And that’s a good group to be in

Arrival is mid 6, prisoners was revenge porn with a good ending. Sicario kinda annoyed me. He's got style, I'll give him that.

Blade Runner was just as boring as the original. Arrival was ok but nothing special. I hope he moves away from sci fi for his next movie.

A few weeks ago, Warner Bros announced an “untitled Warner Bros./Legendary/Denis Villeneuve event film in IMAX” for Dec 2026. The rumor is he is adapting Nuclear War: A Scenario

Nuclear War: A Scenario is a 2024 nonfiction book by American journalist Annie Jacobsen. It outlines a timeline of a hypothetical first strike against the continental United States by North Korea.

But if it isn’t, he has given the other options:

Cleopatra
Dune Messiah
Rendezvous with Rama

I would highly recommend it. It’s a school shooting movie which stays very true to the real events which occurred in Canada. It’s filmed in black and white, which actually makes perfect sense for this film - I can’t imagine it having been in color. While his two previous films - August 32nd on Earth and Maelström - were also good, Polytechnique is the film in which it becomes evident we have a genius director hitting the scene. That only becomes more evident with Incendies, after which point he begins gaining mass Hollywood-style appeal.

Visually, he's at the top of the modern game. I have a lot of respect for what he's put on screen in that respect.

His movies are good, but there's something too sterile and joyless in what I've seen from him for my taste. It's clearly a stylistic choice and at times with movies like Sicario and Blade Runner 2049 it makes sense, but I think it was a little too oppressive with Dune.

Sicario sucks me in anytime it’s on TV. Border scene is perfection

Sicario is much better than any of those.

Same here. Technically great, but I feel absolutely nothing when I watch his movies

In general or because of my personal opinion of Sicario isn't to you're liking?

Arrival Is a good movie just not a 8 in my view.

Interesting take. Agree his Hollywood films (Prisoners and later) have what is probably an intentional nihilistic feel to them, and I frankly appreciate that relative to Hollywood’s bias towards happy endings. But I suspect Incendies and Polytechnique would have you feeling quite a bit.

It's not related to the narrative content or the endings. I like darkand nihilistic and depressing stuff. It's the way he composes his shots, his color grading, the way he directs his actors, etc. It all contributes to this sense of coldness/sterility.

Incendies and Arrival aren't as drastic in this regard as most of his other movies, but it's clearly something he strives for. He's hyper focused on technical precision and the production side, which is fine
