He was also in Bright Lights, Big City in his 80s prime, and played a great role in the Aaron Sorkin penned The American President. You can see some of those characters as precursors to their West Wing counterparts.

Ding ding ding

Look at John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, Paul Newman, Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise — they made amazing careers out of being likeable guys who basically played the same part.

That was the one role I always thought, woah I'm not watching Michael J. Fox.

Maybe because he snorted movie coke off a mirror.

But Family Ties, Secret of My Success, Back to the Future, Doc Hollywood...you were watching Michael J. Fox and nobody cared because you wanted to see that likeable guy.

Casualties of War he tried to depart from his bread and butter roles and it didn't work.

So many of the 80's teen movie stories and characters were so over the top melodramatic and "cool" that there was a real opening for someone who was young, likable, and relatively normal.

Not a great actor, just a very likeable guy with enough acting chops to get lots of work. Like the 80s version of Will Smith.

I love both those guys, BtW, so this is not a slight to them.

He’s a good actor, not great actor, that missed his opportunity to redeem himself as a midlife actor because he is ill. Think John Travolta level career reboots.

That is a great summary.

God hating him is the only reason Charlie Sheen had a career.

BTTF - obviously great

Teen Wolf - pretty good

Secret of My Success - underrated

Doc Hollywood - not bad

Family Ties - he was great

Spin City - also he was great

Guess I would describe his career as "fun"
