if they renew it or not.
Wheel of Time was almost universally hated and they still gave it a 2nd season.
I don’t think there is an actual way to determine it now a days.

They care about subscribers. Are these shows driving subscriptions.

For damn good reason. Ahsoka is a solid show, just to get the most out of it you have to watch a lot of back story from other shows.
I haven't started the acolyte but I have no desire to either. It doesn't even contain any characters I'm familiar with as far as I know.
It does suck that you can't trust review services anymore because we all knew Acolyte was gonna get flooded with a million 0/10 votes as soon as it was first announced who was in charge of it.
I get why people review bomb it, but I still feel like there should be a better way of rating shows.
The only option is to watch an episode and see if it's for you. The only way to tell if something flopped is if it gets canceled.
People claimed Mando season 3 flopped and then the numbers came out (from independent streaming tvs/devices) and they were really good and right up there with season 2.

Yea Sammy is wrong as usual. Shows like WOT, Rings of Power, Thelma for example were purchased for multiple seasons so unless it’s a world class disaster they’re going to get that second season. What’s crazy about The Acolyte is while it was purchased for multiple seasons there are reports that it’s only going to get the 1. If that happens it’ll be the biggest flop this side of Rings of Power.

So there's probably more hope that the show will flop than there is actual flopping
With a reported budget of $180 million and other reports that season 2 has already been shitcanned despite another $20 million already being sunk into it, this looks like a massive flop. Just OK numbers with that budget is not good for the accounting office. It’s less than Ahsioka, and FAR less than the Kenobi show as far as views with a much higher budget.

I turned on my firestick and scrolled around, and The Acolyte was listed as the #1 show on Fire TV or whatever. So THAT seems to indicate it's being watched.
As for season 2 being cancelled- it's 3 episodes in. How can anyone make that call already, one way or the other? If episode 5 turns the corner and everyone watches from then on, do they reorder it again after having cancelled it?

You just made every part of this up.

They make it up.
At this point, the only numbers the public has are the numbers disney has released. Neilson streaming numbers are on a 4 week delay, and those are dependent on the data that a streaming service provides. Disney and especially Apple have been historically cagey with their data.
Also, if 11.million people watched Acolyte in its first week, as disney claimed, it would not the lowest streamed star wars show. That honor will likely remain Andor's, even though Andor is the only star wars property worth a second of any adult's time since Empire. Streaming numbers don't necessarily correlate with quality.

If it's Disney, it flopped.

If “they” is Disney, then you may be right. “They” released initial viewing numbers, though when “they” say views, it is unclear if it was per episode or overall seeing as how “they” dropped 2 initially. “Their” numbers showed less than what “ they”released for Ashoka, and way less than what “they”released for Kenobi. “They” spun that by saying it was the highest streamed show on D+ this year, but that beats Echo, the X-men cartoon and Bluey, which is probably the best show on this list.

Here are the series/season premiere viewing figures for all the Star Wars live action shows:
Mando S3: 23.51 million views
Obi-Wan Kenobi: 11.27 million views
Book of Boba Fett: 10.33 million views
Ahsoka: 8.55 million views
Andor: 5.42 million views
The Acolyte: 6.8 million views (estimate)
Flop

With streaming and pay services and all that. Is there some sort of rating service for that sort of thing?
So there are ratings services.

I haven't watched this show and never will, but this isn't true. It premiered better than Ashoka (the highest of any D+ show of 2024) but total numbers Ashoka has now passed it up. If they keep the numbers they have now it will 100% get a second season.

Neilsen ratings does release minutes viewed. Those numbers are extrapolated from sample audiences, like has always been done with ratings, but it does track minutes viewed.
I’ve done Neilsen twice (once for TV and once for Radio). The streaming stuff is self reported by consumers and they compare it with the official released numbers. The radio stuff is all self reported and they even have questions about how much streaming music you listen to.

Sentiment from fans and the public is how you get the consensus nowadays. It used to be opinions from the media and critics that were official but regular folk like us will now confirm what sucks and what doesn’t

Except at this point Disney clearly doesn't care if people like the show or not, as long as they are watching.
All the hate watching this board does is help out Disney. They don't care if you're watching if you hate it or like it, as long as you are watching and keeping your membership.
If people actually wanted to stop these shows from happening the best thing they could do is cancel their membership, not actually watching the show.
