Help settle an argument: Gandolfini’s Tony Soprano vs Cranston’s Walter White

Had a huge debate at dinner with bunch of my buddies the other night.
Which actor did you think did a better job if you were forced to pick 1?

Acting? Cranston, and it's not close, imo.
He believably portrayed a character that went from push-over family-man nerd to a narcissistic/manipulative cold & calculating drug-lord.

Cranston's Walter White all day long for me. Both are great though.

Cranston hands down.. we watched him completely transform a character throughout the show.. Gandolfini was incredible but the character was static with variations throughout the years.

I was on Cranston side but my best friend was legit angry anyone would go against Tony

Definitely Cranston. Look at him in Breaking Bad versus Malcom in the Middle and compare that to Gandolfini in Sopranos vs anything else he did.
Tony Soprano wasn't a deep character. He was angry, violent and bombastic. Walter White ran the gambit from being timid to being desperate to being a complete hard-arse. Don't get me wrong, both did their parts extremely well but Tony's just wasn't as demanding as Walter's.

Just think of every character Gandolfini (rip) did and you'll see a lot of Tony in that.
Walter White vs Hal Wilkerson.

Walter White’s character arc is the greatest of all time. A lot of it is the writing, but most of it is Cranston bringing it to life.

Given that question specifically, I think they were pretty much equal. Sure Cranston showed much more range and took his character on a journey like no other character in television history, but Tony wasn't a character that needed to change or evolve. Gandolfini played Tony perfectly. Cranston played Walter White better than anyone else could have in my opinion, but he didn't play his character any better than Gandolfini did Tony. Both were perfect. Cranston is a much, much better actor, but you didn't ask that, you asked who did a better job. They both did exceptional jobs playing their character.

I prefer Tony Soprano’s character to Walter white, but I would agree that Cranston did a better acting job.
While I’ve heard nothing but good things about James gandolfini’s real life persona, at the end of the day, he’s a big, Italian alpha male type and that’s what he portrayed on the show.
