Given that question specifically, I think they were pretty much equal. Sure Cranston showed much more range and took his character on a journey like no other character in television history, but Tony wasn't a character that needed to change or evolve. Gandolfini played Tony perfectly. Cranston played Walter White better than anyone else could have in my opinion, but he didn't play his character any better than Gandolfini did Tony. Both were perfect.

This

The question most people seem to be answering is which actor had more range.

Cranston over Gandolfini on the acting, but Tony over Walt on a hypothetical, "Which would you rather work for?"

Don't remember Tony poisoning any children.

Tony Soprano wasn't a deep character.

Are you fricking shitting me???

Tony Soprano is one of the most complicated and complex characters maybe ever... He's also the best dramatic television character ever.

BTW, Gandolfini is the better actor also. Cranston can't exude the power and intimidation like Gandolfini could.

I always considered Walter White basically a wannabe tough guy, even though he did bad things, but Tony was a full fledged sociopath with the tone to match.

You'd rather work for Tony? How many of his own captains did he kill?

Gandolfini. Cranston is a one demintional actor.

Cranston played the same character, a dim witted man in front of a recreational vehicle in his underwear..............

If the OP question is which is the better character, the answer is tony soprano, as he’s probably the greatest character in tv history.

Just think of every character Gandolfini (rip) did and you'll see a lot of Tony in that.

I don't see a lot of similarities between Tony Soprano and the lowly whistleblower he portrayed in A Civil Action. His character in "Enough Said" also was a very different character from Tony Soprano. Gandolfini showed plenty of versatility with his acting throughout his career.

Cranston by a country mile.

No disrespect intended to Gandolfini, either. Cranston as WW was just THAT good.

Walter White had a much more compelling character arc. Starting out as a innocent high school teacher to naive and bumbling drug dealer to eventual ruthless kingpin. So he got to show off a much broader range. Tony was just an intense sociopathic a-hole the entire time. His outbursts of anger and emotion he displayed were incredible though.

Just depends on what you are looking for.

Cranston- he played a character that was probably relatively close to his own personality, but he had to portray that character going through a whole range of emotions/transformations - and keeping in mind the whole time that White was not really a hard arse, murdering drug lord - he was just sort of posturing that way because of the situation.

Think of his key murders: Tuco, Gayle, Fring, Mike's guys and Lydia - nerd knowledge, use Jesse as proxy, nerd knowledge, throw money/proxy at it, nerd knowledge. Even the finale - nerd knowledge.

Cranston didn't even do the best acting job in BB, IMHO (although he was fantastic) - that was Esposito's Fring. And Banks' Mike was excellent, too, comparable to Cranston and maybe a little better.

Spinoff question-

Would you have an easier time imagining someone besides Cranston as WW? Or gandolfini/TS.

I suppose I’m trying to figure out who’s more synonymous with their character, Cranston or gandolfini.

I could reboot BB tomorrow with Ty Burrell as WW. Wouldn't be the same, but he could do it, IMHO.

I'm not sure anyone else could pull off Tony Soprano. My imagination isn't that good, I suppose.
