I do think Snape being black could change the way you look at James & Sirius.

If they just make it the books exactly, don’t leave anything out and don’t put anything new in, it’s going to be awesome IMO.

The movies leave so much of the nuance and details out because well they are movies and they have to fit the whole story into a few hours

The Harry Potter generation aren't kids any more, so I hope they take the opportunity to explore some of the more "mature" elements from the books (the abuse from the Dursleys, Tom Riddle's family back story, racism/classism/genocide, more on Dumbledore's background, and so on). Just my 2 cents. I'll be locked in to every episode regardless just for the nostalgia that HP brings with it.

Yeah but there are multiple more “Harry Potter generations” now. I don’t think we need to get too deep into the adult themes.

Trailer looks good. Honestly would’ve made more sense to have Harris, Dumbledore, or McGonagall be black than Snape given the backstories now that it’s come to screen.

it has been a very long time since I read a Harry Potter book or watched the Harry Potter movie, but wasn’t the first movie a scene for scene adaptation of the first book? How are they creating an entire television season on something that’s already been done?

I could see how later seasons would make a lot more sense because a lot of the material from the book never made it to the screen.

Because they do it all the time.

I don't understand the point of this series. it's the same characters and same timeline as the movies. We already know what happens to them during this time period.
Seems rather stupid to simply remake what already happen. If you're going to make a show during the same time frame of the movies, then you'd think they would focus on other characters, like Malfoy, or even Snape or Dumbledore. At least we know they were doing things in the background of the movies that we haven't seen. Pretty sure we know what Harry did during this time, at least the important stuff.

I mean.. we knew what Harry did before the movies came out too. Why make any adaptation?

They can cover a lot more ground in an 8-episode season than the film could cover in ~2 hours. Which may not be a huge deal in the first season, but absolutely will make a difference when they get to the later books that were 600-700+ pages. And since the first few books were shorter, I suspect they will give the other characters more screen time.

This x 1000

Why is Hogwarts so freaking dark? The books are set in the 90s. There’s electricity. And there’s wizards who can make candles as bright as they want them to be.

It’s like filmmakers have forgotten how to use lighting.

And I don’t give a damn about the stuff from the books they left out in the films. I don’t watch film adaptations to have everything in the books put to film; I go to see the world an author created adapted into a visual medium. If I wanted every little detail Rowling wrote, I’d go read the damned books again.

I’m surprised the same people who bitch about all the things that got left out of the films don’t get off the Hagrid’s ride at Universal and complain, “But that wasn’t in the books!”

Theres actually no electricity in Hogwarts.

The magic concentration caused muggle electronics and electricity to malfunction or stop working.

Idk how HBO fricks this up but I’ll be watching until it happens. This looks surprisingly great

I don’t agree with everyone saying it’s the same as the first movie
Some things need to be rehashed, but opening the first trailer with Petunia being the one emotionally abusing Harry shows a different story than the movies, where Uncle Vernon was always the abuser and Petunia had relatively little character. This scene shows they intend to develop this series to be more than just rehashing what the movies did

If they get far enough into the books, I wonder if they'll explore the fact that as a teenager, Severus Snape created a spell that could kill someone . . .
quote:

The Laceration Curse (Sectumsempra) was a curse invented by Severus Snape[6] that lacerated the target and caused severe bleeding.[1] Snape created it as a student of Hogwarts, and contrary to other spells he created for usage against opponents in duels, like Langlock and the Dangling Jinx, he explicitly marked for usage against enemies.
