A coworker who hasn’t read the book asks me each Monday if they’ve changed anything.
My response this week was “basically everything except for Helena impaling herself on the spikes”
I was actually glad to see that. She had a “vision” a few weeks ago that made me think they were going to have her freak out and be the one to take down the dragon pit.

At this point, I don't think this is a book adaptation as much as a "retelling" of the book. "History books say it happened that way but here is how it really went down." But how it "really went down" is 100 times less interesting and worse than the history books.

My thing with Daemon is that I thought he was supposed to be this incredible warrior and then gets bested fairly easily by Jon fricking Roxton.
Considering that in canon he wasn’t even at the battle but it seems pretty ridiculous that he would’ve gotten so easily beaten.

She just went to her literally last episode as her confidant and center of trust.
I agree that she can’t trust her, my point is that it completely invalidated what we saw from these two in literally the preceding episode. It felt like they cut an episode out in between.

Rhaenyra is supposed to be a character that you hate, especially after she takes Kings Landing. At least in the book that’s how it appears. The kingdom goes from calling her “The Realms Delight” to “Maegor With Teets”.
I actually don’t think the writers did enough to make her unlikeable

No. She got dressed up to play house, just to have someone else kill someone at the High Septon. Other than that she didn’t do anything besides closing the shutters on a window at the end.

Can we talk about another dumb decision by the show runners? They make a big deal about Daemon telling Roddy not to die before he opens the gate. He sends them into aarow fire and then up ladders where they get oil and rocks dropped on them only to blow the gate open with his dragon before roddy ever gets near the gate.
WTF?
They could have just blown the doors off at the start and saved the Winter Wolves to wreak havoc on the Greens at that point.

That was the original plan but Ormund was using all of the town's children as a human shield so they had to pivot to a strategy (a multi-layered spread out attack) that reduced child casualties and the inevitable PR nightmare that would follow.

The YouTubers that have hated previous episodes liked this one.
I just can't imagine casual viewers liking it. It's better for book readers because we can fill in the character development blanks where the show neglected them. It's the only reason I still somewhat enjoy the show as a whole.
ETA: and FWIW, those last two kids did jump out of the way at the last second before Caraxes blew the door down.
Although, Roddy definitely did smash that kid's face. The memes are everywhere.
