I have to say I didn't get the slightest hint that Renly and the knight of flowers were gay from reading the books. I know there is a lot about Renly being in love with himself, but I just took it as him being solely interested in the prestige of being king and the social aspect of it rather than wanting to be a strong ruler.
Are you thinking of Stannis? Every person in the books describes Renly as being soft and Stannis as being hard as a rock.
ETA:
That episode was definitely awesome. Though, I really wish there were a couple more episodes in the season because I feel like everything is moving a little too fast. I guess if I hadn't read the books I wouldn't feel that way.

And another thing, Renly is a pussy on the show. He talked alot of shite in the book and seemed like a badass.

And yeah Cat's sister and son are just as creepy as they are in the book.
I was expecting them to be creepy, but damn, they blew my expectations out of the water

I just finished book 2, and honestly, aside from Renley's love of fashion (which isn't unusual in this book, as what people are wearing, even hard scrabble lords like Ned often are described in great detail) and his rainbow guard with their rainbow cloaks--okay, rainbows, but c'mon, not like they could have the same meaning in Westeros, eh--I didn't get a lot of hint on this first reading that he was getting busy with the knight of flowers. MINOR BOOK SPOILER Esp after he marries the dude's sister and seems really really close to her...
Also, fight scene with Jaime and Ned--I like that they actually crossed blades and you get a sense that maybe Jaime realizes he could be overmatched and possibly could have lost but for interference, but in the book, he doesn't bother to engage, but leaves it for his men as he rides away. Interesting change... Also another scene not in the book was the exchange between Robert and Cersei, discussing Lyanna. She talks about how she felt something for him, before she lost their first boy--not sure I buy that, as in the book, she aborts the only baby they conceive together, as I recall. Are we supposed to feel more sympathy for show-Cersei?

In the first episode, when the boys found that dead wolf with the babies, did the ward get one of the puppies too?
No, I beleive that was Jon Snow, Stark's bastard.

Correct, the ward did not get a direwolf pup. 5 pups went to the Stark children and then the outcast white pup, Ghost, went to Ned's bastard Jon.

Cat's sister is all kinds of crazy, eh? WTF happened to her?
Ever since her husband, Jon Arryn, was murdered, she became an overprotective psycho.
I'm halfway through A Clash of Kings right now and thought one comment made about Renly seemed weird in reference to his difficulty in producing an heir. I feel like stupid now since I figured that was a hint that he was impotent or something. Now that I think back to the first book and the first half of the second, I should have realized he was gay.

I had just read the first book and did not pick up on either Renly or the Lord of Flowers being gay. I must need to fix my gaydar.

I hated this scene. It seemed like they were trying to get those who didn't read the book to see Cersei as a likable character instead of the hateful cunt that she is.

I wouldn't call her a count. Her character lacks the necessary warmth and depth to be a count.

Maybe I can see someone not seeing it after Book 1, there are hints but they are subtle, but after Book 2?
I mean, there are no scenes like the one last night and its all implied, but if should be fairly obvious that Loras and Renly are gay. I mean...c'mon.
Just thinking off the top of my head, and its been awhile since I read the books...
SPOILERS For later books:
But Stannis says to Renly on his wife "She'll die a maid in your bed" or something to that effect.
Jaime says something to Loras about sheathing his sword in a place even Renly didn't find. Among, many, many other references.
But, HBO has to gay it up to make some shocking elements or controversy, and to give Renly's scenes in Season 2 more...punch.
As for the Cersei scene:
They have to do that for TV. Cersei is nothing but a cold evil bitch in the books, but I don't know that it would work on screen. They have to give her SOME emotional depth.
