I will await the Disney Defender Squad to tell us that everyone is wrong, and this is a huge success. . .from a certain frame of mind
Or that it was racist white Youtubers that caused it to fail

Nobody, and I mean nobody, wanted a live action Moana only 10 years removed from the original and the 2nd one is only 2 years old

Both actors are way too old. I have no idea why they decided that Moana should be a teenager and Old Rock is just creepy and out of place.

According to that headline, the "trolls" are making a criticism that is itself inaccurate, which makes it not hypocritical.
And that makes the claim that Variety hates white people based on a misunderstanding of mutual exclusivity super fukking stupid, especially to anyone who's read more than 2 articles on Variety, a publication notorious for celebrating the achievements of white pople while concern trolling the achievements of people of color.
And yes, Rooad, no one gave or gives a frick about this Moana. Not even our resident Disney accountants have felt the need to weigh in with a made up number of much money Disney could lose. Which will likely be a lot.

At this point isn't Disney running out of material to "live action" mutilate?
They've already done all their golden era classics, they've done all their renaissance era classics, they did a bunch of their B tier films as well, and now they've resorted to remaking stuff that was very recently made.
Just looked over the list and what's even left as an option? Pocahontas? Tangled? Frozen?
Or do they just start the process over and start remaking everything again?

Moana was a bad movie to redo. They skulls have gone deeper into movies that were good but didn't do so well. Like Emperors new groove or sword and the stone.

I’ve never seen the original and we enjoyed this new one. I don’t get the hate for it, cute movie but insane to spend $250 million on it

For me this is a fair take. My kids were just at the right age to want to see 2016 Moana with its magic and music and humor when it first came out. They liked it. I liked it. Life has gone on and now, perhaps sadly, they have aged out of that type of movie. But if you have kids that are of that age and none of you had seen the first.... And if the studio stayed pretty much true to the original, I don't know why you wouldn't like it. Even an aged Rock Johnson wouldn't put you off because, for you, that would be your first impression.

This could easily be described as a movie where they are expecting to rake it in on the family crowd and merchandising over time. Sure, they'd probably like to have summer-blockbuster-like numbers, but it's not necessarily a requirement for them to still cash in.

I don't understand making a live action version when it is all still going to be CGI. You have CGI or animation with a real person inserted. It's just dumb.
Shows like Cinderella, Tangled, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, make sense because you can actually film live scenery for the entire movie.

I have three daughters. They loved the original and I actually preferred it to most everything else my kids watched over and over growing up. I would imagine we were the prime target. But we’ve had no desire to watch this. It seems like it wouldn’t even be that live action. Just real actors in front of a bunch of CGI. And I would imagine facial expressions are limited compared to the original animation. I just don’t see the point.
