How does the board feel about them?

They’re the greatest animated movies ever made. Good choice to watch Naussica before Princess Mononoke. Prepare to have your arse blown off watching that one. Castle in the Sky is fantastic. Kiki’s Delivery Service is delightful. Grave of the Fireflies is probably the greatest film that you will never ever want to watch again (a deliberately deeply upsetting film). Fan of the Cat Returns. Porco Rosso is a great time.

But I’m jealous you’re experiencing their catalog for the first time. The animation tournament was a disgrace with not a single Ghibli film making it past the first round. Princess Mononoke losing to The Sword in the Stone was the most retarded shite to ever happen on this board. Of course basically every person that voted for the later did not see the former.

Ponyo is my favorite animated movie of all time.

That’s the one Miyazaki film I could never get into. Yes it’s beautiful and it’s charming... but a love story between two 5 year olds just doesn’t work for me. I remember when I was 5 being very confused that my parents didn’t always know each other. 5 year olds don’t understand love. Should have upped the ages to 8. It just comes across as creepy to me when it’s trying to be charming (even if it sometimes succeeds in doing so).

The dubs have been awesome so far. Think I’ll watch dubs then subs after. I have no issue with subs...at all ...but was happy to see some of the star power they used in the voice overs.

If you watch Princess Mononoke, then definitely stick with the dub. First off it’s probably the best dub from Ghibli. Secondly there are a bunch of talking animals in it where the animals speak in the sexes Japanese perceive the animals as, even if they’re overtly the opposite sex. In western culture wolves are largely identified more feminine, but in Japan it’s masculine to where one of the wolves that is overtly female speaks in a very masculine voice because of it. I’ve seen the original quite a few times, and that always really distracts me.

Yes they’re great!! A few years ago a coworker of mine suggested them to a group of us at work and we all watched them (he rewatched them) and it was a really great time at work discussing everything - my kids watched them too so they chimed in when they visited at work - it was fun to see who liked what

However, my coworker warned me about grave of the fireflies - I’ve still never seen it but my older kids watched it a few weeks ago - they still don’t want me to see it - although they said it was a great movie and they were so nice to their younger siblings for a few days after that

My oldest is really into anime bc of those movies and we’ve found some really great stuff to watch - but it’s all basically bc of Totoro

My kids roped me into watching a few of them over the last couple of weeks. They’re absolutely amazing movies. I’m so glad they talked me into watching. They warned me about grave of the fireflies. I think I’ll stay away from that one for now.

Going to sound like "that guy" a bit but I "discovered" nausicca in the 1980s on TBS late one night when randomly flipping stations.

It was a bastardized version of the movie i later found out was called "warriors of the wind" they had chopped the movie up and left out major parts but I knew I was watching something very special and for years after (pre internet) I tried to tell people about it but it disappeared like a fart in the wind because I didn't even know the name of it. Just caught it playing right in the middle.

So this movie has always had a very special place for me. It was the mid 90s before I heard of Miyazaki or knew what the movie was called.

I went so far as to find a place in Japan in the 90s that sold models from the movie and ordered them.

Still haven't built them. one day..

A personal favorite. I watched it when I was a kid; the Americanized version when it was called Warriors of the Wind.

Yep, and frankly I generally enjoy dubs more. The English language has more range of emotion in it (fully understand that part of that is because it is the language I am used to), but I generally just think English voice actors are better.

I full understand the reasons behind watching it subbed and do so with most of these, but I generally prefer the dubbed versions.

Its been a long time since I've seen Spirited Away, which is the only one of these I've seen, but I would like to dive more into these as I do remember loving Spirited Away

but my question is if a 7 year could or should be able to handle most of these thematically?

she loves Avatar, and it has some heavy themes in it, but also some silliness

when disney re-released these in the early 2000s they got Grade A actors and did a very professional job w/ the dubs so very little lost there. Phil Hartman as Kiki's cat, Patrick Stewart as Lord Yupa and Claire Danes as Mononoke were amazing.

tough call. definitely NOT mononoke or grave. those are the most adult of the movies.

salmon one of the best part of miyazaki movies is the character development. unlike one-dimensional 'cartoon' bad guys like avatar, your opinion of the various characters changes as you watch the movie. very nuanced. avatar is the real cartoon here.

start with totoro.

as for nausicaa there are some intense moments

God i love that movie

Mononoke is this

but also this

totoro is very innocent and one of the best kids movies out there. no need to pre-vet that one.

Totoro, Ponyo, Kiki, Castle in the Sky are as safe as it gets IMO

The others like Howl, Spirited Away are largely harmless but may have a few intense scenes

Poppy Hill and Wind Rises are probably not kid friendly in terms of captivating them from the plot because it is more subtle and narrative focused vs imagination/magic and big fun scenes

For a 7 year old I would probably pass on Mononoke and Grave

I might stay away from Grave of the Fireflies and possibly Princess Mononoke depending on her maturity. Princess Mononoke is one of the most violent animated films ever made with tons of blood, gore, beheadings, and even has prostitutes as major characters (although the later will go over her head).

I’m pretty sure he’s talking about Avatar: The Last Airbender, not James Cameron’s Avatar. The cartoon Avatar has very complicated villains.
