Finally getting around to these on HBO go.

So far I have watched:

Nausica
Totoro
Spirited Away

I’m kind of blown away at how much I’m enjoying these films. Just impressive all the way round. I had always heard good things (mostly from females) but just brushed them off and had no real expectations. Now I feel like I’m watching some of the best films out there. I donno just shocked as a mid 30’s male that I want to go out and buy all the films to add to the collection.

How does the board feel about them?

Howls Moving castle is next.

Best hand animation plus storytelling ever made. I'll say early Pixar was just as good, but Miyazaki was a fricking genius.

I've never been able to decide which one of these I love more.

Greatest animated film ever made. Truly a gift of art.

Howl's is solid. Princess Mononoke also very good.

Good to know I’m not the only one. Like they are fricking brilliant pieces of work. I watched Nausica first and thought omg no way they can get better than this and was impressed it was released in the mid 80’s. Spirited away is just I don’t know...... a fricking masterpiece.

All the ones I watched so far I will for sure watch again.

Really hope this thread catches some eyes for those who haven’t watched. Can’t believe it’s taken me this long.

Great thread! Studio Ghibli has been a huge positive of my evenings during this year. Ponyo is my favorite animated movie of all time. You’ll love the artistry of Howl. May I recommend The Wind Rises as well. Beautiful work of art. And yes, always use the subtitles instead of dubs. There is a spirit to Moyazaki’s films that are simply in no others.

The dubs have been awesome so far. Think I’ll watch dubs then subs after. I have no issue with subs...at all ...but was happy to see some of the star power they used in the voice overs.

Want to really get blown away? Buy the 1,500+ page 4 volume nausicca manga.

The movie only covers like the first 100 pages. The story is fantastic and I would say every bit as majestic as Dune even though done as manga.

Really now?

I was very very intrigued by that story and world. Obviously it is all very original and I think part of the reason I like them so much. Like some one mentioned and it’s quick to realize that the story telling is some of the best. Just refreshing considering the state of the world at the moment.

Yeah the wife was saying she thinks that one is her favorite. I’m excited to watch them all honestly because I feel like I may find a new favorite with each one.
