We opted to watch Princess Mononoke before Howl’s. Haven’t finished it yet but I really like where it is going. Obviously won’t make a decision yet on where it ranks so far as I have only seen Mononoke briefly. Visually again....breathtaking...especially when the Kodama first show.

Strange thing is that Grave isn’t on HBO. Not that I’m in any rush for that.

Mononoke is great and one of his best works. Just not sure if it is suitable for the average 7 year old.

Also for your original post

My wife showed me his movies for the first time about 4 years ago

We now own everything he has done

I’m pretty sure he’s talking about Avatar: The Last Airbender, not James Cameron’s Avatar. The cartoon Avatar has very complicated villains.

missed that.

yeah its ironic that the 'real life' avatar movie has the most cartoonish villians while hand drawn cartoons have extremely complex real-life characters who are neither 100% good nor 100% bad.

Spirited Away

Never seen or heard of this and watched a trailer after reading through this thread. All I can say is WOW. The world that was created is absolutely amazing and gorgeous. That animation is just beautiful.

I'm definitely going to watch that one tonight and try to check out some other Ghibli movies. Looks like this thread has created another fan in me so thanks for putting it out here. I've seriously never even heard of SG but really excited to dive in based on that 2 minute trailer.

You won’t regret it and I encourage anyone on the line about them to give it a go. Especially this year.

Spirit Away really didn’t impress me much in the story/plot department, and I’m a relatively decent anime fan. The visuals were beautiful, but the story felt like it really dragged on at the midpoint.

the 'mystery guest' and 'no face' were the best parts of the movie

I can see where one might feel that way. However No face kept me intrigued and there was a lot of low key subliminal message to take away from it much like the other movies. A great message if I’m honest with myself. The bath house was toxic and no face...was molded by that toxicity in search for approval....sound familiar in American society right now?

That’s just my take.

None of that mattered to Chihiro. She kept true to herself and her goal. Pureness. We begin to lose that as we age.

Just watched and I'm blown away. I'm just wondering how I've never heard of this amazing was.

I have to agree with others that this is one of, if not the best, animated movies I've ever watched. Just brilliant.

Right? It’s really hard for me to grasp the animation part. Would have never sniffed these had it not been for HBO go. Watch some more. Everything I have watched the past 3 nights has been truly wonderful.

At the AMC movie chains here in Nashville they run a Miyazaki fest every summer where they show a different one every week.

They look amazing on the big screen.
