Also, why would Dottie tell the pitcher exactly how to strike out Kit minutes before throwing the game?
i haven't seen the movie in a hot minute, but isn't there a clearly display of dottie seeing kit react negatively (possibly crying) between the "she can't hit the high stuff" betrayal and the final drop?

Dottie's husband comes home with an injured foot and says a sniper got him. What kind of shitty kraut sniper shoots a guy in the foot? Dude was probably a chicken shite and gave himself a million dollar wound.

Even Dottie’s coach and teammates knew in their hearts she dropped it on purpose.
I don’t know why some people think the movie was about some kind of redemption arc for Kit. The ending is about the more talented big sister seeing her little sister having a breakdown, which leads to the big sis letting little sis be the hero. The movie was never about Kit.

I am not going to get into this fight, but I will say Gina Davis never looked better than she did in that movie.

Is it possible Kit's meltdown had an effect on Dottie causing her to lose her edge and that is why she dropped the ball?
That AB Dottie was calling for high pitches that Kit couldn't lay off of and Kit was melting down as a result. She accidentally runs into one and puts the ball in play shocking Dottie. The play at the plate Dottie didn't mean to drop the ball but subconsciously she dropped it because kid sister had finally worn her down enough. It happens, eventually little sis's whining geta to a person.

Dottie drop the ball on purpose, if you watch the beginning of the movie, older Dottie tells her oldest grandson to let the younger one win. This is the Penny Marshall showing her hand.

I don't even know if it is about Dottie letting Kit be the hero. As someone else said, Dottie is an a-hole and now she gets to know, forever, that the only reason her sister won was because she dropped the ball on purpose. Now she gets to always believe that 1) She really won and 2) The only reason that Kit "won" was because Dottie gave it to her. That way she wins twice in her mind because only she knows the truth.
I like to imagine that when Dottie dies she left Kit a letter in which she tells her she didn't really win that game because Dottie dropped the ball on purpose.

I used to think Dottie dropped the ball on purpose but came to realize...Dottie's sort of an a-hole.
Apart from all her efforts to keep Kit from even being on the team...and constantly chastising Kit...she wouldn't drop it on purpose just a few minutes away of telling her pitcher how to strike out her sister.
If she dropped it on purpose, she wouldn't smile at Kit with admiration at the end...like yeah, you beat me.
She'd just walk to the dugout and be like, yeah I gave you one.
The pride shot of Dottie is the reveal. Because lets face it, she was an a-hole.

That's how I've always viewed it. And it is what makes the most sense IMO. You can also see Dottie get caught a little off guard when Kit rounds third headed home. She was like "Oh shite, she's coming" and that affected her too.
Plus, I don't think Dottie would have been truly happy for Kit knowing she had'nt earned anything and that Dottie just handed it to her like she always did before. I've never understood why Dotties arc couldn't be that she was finally truly happy for Kit because she knew that Kit had finally earned something over her. I don't think she would be proud of her or happy for her if it was cheap.

We should have gotten a sequel detailing "All the way Mae"'s descent in to full blown prostitution after the league folded.

There is no breakdown by Kit. There is absolutely no indication of this in the scene. She isn't crying, or freaking out, or giving some look of betrayal to Dottie. She's at bat and focused on the game the entire scene.

Dott sabotaged her own team. Kitt figured out what Dott told the pitcher. Look at Dott's face when Kitt actually rips it. Dott got her arse runt over because Kitt wanted it more. She did not drop the ball, she got planted. Kitt is the hero of the story for defeating the oppression of Dott.

I hope everyone who says she dropped it on purpose hates the movie, because the movie is shite if you believe that she did.
Penny Marshall even said it until people attacked her for it, then she just said it's up to the audience to decide.
As a younger sibling, even I think she dropped it on purpose. If Dottie wanted to win, she would have won. She wanted to let Kit have it. She wouldn't have even joined the team if it wasn't for Kit. The whole movie is because Kit pushed her to do it.
I enjoy the movie with that ending, it's bittersweet and full of regret. Dottie struggles with being in the league, leaves and comes back at a crucial time for the team. Her final decision isn't with the team or she would have stuck around instead of abandoning the league and going off with her husband. No family even goes with her to the hall of fame. She is completely alone. It's a sad ending and makes you wonder if she regrets everything, I like it.

I legitimately don't think she dropped it on purpose. I always thought the point was that Kit had finally bested her sister - stepping out from Dottie's shadow and achieving something completely on her own in the process.
Dottie Henson does not get bested by her sister. Ever. Dottie made a choice that salvaging any relationship with her sister was more important than beating her yet again in a game that meant nothing to her. The knowing look Jimmy gives her after the game all but proves that.
Hey Rider, are you and older sibling or younger sibling?

Here's the thing about great athletes. Even the best ones to ever play the game get beat by middle of the road athletes from time to time. Kit got the best of Dottie in this instance. Seriously, can Dottie predict the future? I'm gonna tell the pitcher to throw high fastballs that Kit has trouble hitting because I know in this instance she going to miraculously connect with one and she'll be the hero of the game. If Dottie drops it on purpose, then it cheapens Dotties character big time, and cheapens the whole movie as well.

Dottie did not drop anything, look at here facial expressions during the entire scene. She did not expect Kitt to hit it and she certainly was not ready for her to Pete Rose her at home plate. She lost the ball.

Just came here to say that Lori Petty is one hideous broad.

umm...no.
And Dottie sees this. After the setting shot of Dottie looking at the Belles' dugout at the mid inning break, this is the response shot of what she sees:
This wasn't, however, after any "betrayal" with the high and outside (which doesn't come until Kit comes to the plate, 4 batters later)--
IT WAS AFTER DOTTIE FORCED KIT INTO THE DIRT OF THE MOUND WITH A LINE DRIVE STRAIGHT AT KIT THAT NOT ONLY SCORED THE GO-AHEAD RUN, BUT COULD HAVE SERIOUSLY HURT KIT.
That led to Kit's breakdown and crying jag immediately afterwards. No matter what, her big sister was still not only better, but a hard-hearted bastard.
Dottie, being the ruthless badass that she was, knew of Kit's weakness and called for pitches high and outside, as "she couldn't hit 'em and couldn't lay off of 'em".
She was amazed when Kit not only connected on such a pitch, but also got all of it. She was then even more amazed when Kit ignored the third base coach and came charging in.
And Dottie held on to the ball while getting smashed, all the way to the ground... and then let it roll out of her hand.
I think Dottie, after seeing her sister coming back from a crying breakdown and continuing with a sense of dogged determination, decided to back off and 'gave' her sister one.
Shoot, Dottie didn't care; she had already left the team anyway and was set with a loving husband back from the war for good.
