Part one was close to perfect.

Part two pissed me off with turning Stilgar into a bumbling zealot bellowing "Lisan al Gaib!!" every time Paul did anything. And how they turned Chani into a jaded independent woman who don't need no man and pays her bills. I didn't enjoy it anywhere near as much as part 1.

They completely missed the point of Stilgar and Chani's devotion to Muad'dib as it was portrayed in the books.

I enjoyed both about the same level but for different reasons.

Part 1 was fantastic universe building and character introduction.

Part 2 was really engaging development of multiple characters (Paul, Jessica, Chani, the Harkonnens, Stilgar, and Gurney) and resolution of the set up from part 1.

and objectively better films overall
I can't agree with the objectively part. Too many things I think they got wrong or didn't do. It's prettier, that's for sure.

I prefer 1 as well. Great characters, the Harkonnens were much more fleshed out, in part 2 they were turned into generic bad guys plus Issacs, Mamoa, Dastmalchain, Henderson and Brewster were terrific. 2 was really good as well but the change to Chani, the uneven focus on her and Zendaya’s weak performance brought it down for me. Second half of the movie and ending were rushed and overloaded blowing though important scenes. This as well as cutting Thufir’s scenes and shortening Butler’s screen time was all done to highlight Chani btw which makes it even worse.

Nah everyone in here is wrong, Dune 1 is the great setup but 2 is the masterpiece. A modern empire strikes back

Not the first time I've said this, but it was almost obvious Zendaya had a guaranteed amount of screen time in both films in hopes of bringing in "that crowd" (sorry I have no clue what audience she caters towards but know young folks are obsessed with her)

Shes extremely one dimensional, uninteresting, and honestly too boyish looking.

Also agree about the score. I dont need any more of that weird viking-esqu chick singing

Yea, she didn’t pull off the look in this one.

Part 1 was slower but I enjoyed it more. I guess I like the character development and learning the different houses. Part 2 was good too.

I don't know if I was in a bad mood when I saw it in the theater or what exactly, but I didn't like it. It felt kinda sacrilege almost. Watching it again at home I backed off on that feeling. Still, I enjoyed the first one more.

2 is better. The score is also better in Dune 2. Dude who didn’t like the score, you crazy. Worm Ride, Kiss the Ring, Only I will remain. Great pieces.

I kind of think judging individual parts of a trilogy against each other is silly.

It’s like saying “I liked the part where the boxer knocked the guy out better than the part where he jabbed and feinted”

I still like the '84 version better. I will likely rewatch it multiple times in the future. I cannot see me watching either of the new ones ever again.
Same. 1984 dune has always been my favorite movie. I'll never watch the new ones again. Maybe Dune 1, but unlikely.

Comparing the new and the old films...
Dune 1 had better cinematic development than 84. But it had alot more technology and time.

Kyle is a better Paul... Sean Young is a better Chani.
Maybe it's easier to say which modern Dune characters were better.
Rebecca Ferguson is a better Jessica.
Bautista is a better Rabban.
The worms are better.
And .... That's pretty much it.

I don't get your analogy. Doesn't everyone like the knockout hit the best?

Especially when it’s set up by jabs and feints. They don’t exist in a vacuum. They are parts of a whole

Watched both together on a 9 hour flight yesterday. Made for a great way to pass the time.

Same here. I’m always a sucker for the origin story setup.

Part 2 was very good, but yes, I liked Part 1 better just because I enjoyed the set up. That said, Part 2 was fantastic and I can’t wait for the next one.

I love both movies, but tend to agree here.

Part 2 would’ve been better if the beginning half was slightly condensed and back half wasn’t as rushed.

Ex) it just immediately cut to Feyd bombing the rocks and his uncle’s line: “Old fashioned Artillery, brilliant” …. What did he actually do different than Raban from earlier in the movie when Raban fired all the missiles at the mountains earlier?

Just watched both for the first time over the last 2 days. Why did the Great Houses immediately reject Paul as the new emperor? I thought House Atreides originally had the support of the houses?
