To be fair, Baron and Beast were cartoony in the book.

Never read the book but made fun of the movie the first time I saw it. Dudes riding giant worms and drinking magic water that turns their eyes blue. Just seemed too silly to be taken seriously.

You really should read the book. IMHO, it one of the greatest Science Fiction books ever written.

I'll make that call myself.

to be fair the casting and the initial though of which story line he would be in was a perfect fit....... the execution was a turd.

Reddit just nutted

Pretty sure reddit already debunked this as BS. I remember seeing a thread on r/movies but I can't even find it anymore.

That being said, I'm about to finish the book and can't wait for this movie.

Apparently some footage was shown to some industry folks recently and one guy, a Sci fi writer, flipped out...

Industry folks gave Batman v Superman a standing ovation when they first saw it.

Villanueve is the perfect choice to bring this to life.

an overlooked director for certain. Everyone respects him as a genuinely great one, but people forget about him. Sicario gets all the hype, which is deserved; however, Arrival is a masterpiece. Blade Runner was incredible as well. This dude will be a star at some point

Yeah, the casting in this is not inspiring. Chalamet is especially awful.

One of the few books that I stopped reading halfway through. The main character just wasnt engaging to me and by the middle it just felt like the story wasnt going anywhere.

I would definitely give this a shot though. Probably give the book another shot.

Then the plot went completely off the rails after the first book.

That's the whole problem. Entire first book is about a savior who isn't. I don't think you can tell the Dune story in chronological order in movie format. The mini series did ok with it, but 2 hours means you get fully invested in those characters only to find out they are almost meaningless. It's akin to the Star Wars debacle. Build up a set of heroes only to discard them later.

Beast Rabban is a character in the book, but is barely fleshed out. He might have 5 lines of dialogue. Lynch turns him into a cartoon.

The Baron is not nearly as over the top in the book either.

May be time for another read through, Captain.

The the upcoming movie and the planned sequel are based on the first book. The first book in which Paul is nothing less than a savior to the Fremen.

Without him, they are looking at generations and generations before changing the planet, and they have no plan for throwing off the Imperial/Harkonnen/Guild yoke. Paul delivers it all to them.

If they make more movies based on the other books in the series, I'm pretty sure people can accept the changing cast. Not everything has to be Marvel-esque.

I don't want this at all. In fact, it is the reason why I do not think the movie will succeed in terms of maintaining interest to complete the story. At least Herbert's original story, not necessarily the continuation by his son. I think Dune would be far better served by a long-running series. It's far too nuanced.

I don't get this carping on the cast.
Besides Chalamet,

Oscar Isaac
Rebecca Ferguson
Javier Bardem
Josh Brolin
Stellan Skarsgard
Charlotte Rampling
David Bautista
Jason Momoa
Babs Olusanmokun + others

by all means, let's get Gordon Sumner back, sheesh.
