Mad Men is the reason I try to give a show a full season (unless it’s just atrocious) before quitting on it. I wasn’t sure about it until the first season finale, then I was hooked.

I will say, I can’t binge watch it. I tried on a rewatch and I had to let episodes sit for a bit inbetween.

It made me angry watching knowing how much easier my life would be if I had a personal secretary handling all of my admin shite, remembering my wife’s birthday for me and running interference for people that I don’t want to talk to.

I quit.5 seasons in. Just got repetitive. Have never felt the need to go back and finish. I was really into it for awhile too.

I’d say if it hasn’t grabbed you yet, bounce. Too much good TV out there nowadays.

I was the same way with Mad Men. You gotta let it percolate a little, it really is a fantastic show.

Feel free to tell me what I am supposed to find interesting about Peggy Olson in the first few episodes. She’s literally just the stereotypical secretary from the 60s at this point.

No spoilers but you need to stick around til she begins exhibiting her super powers.

That is a show not meant for binging. I have watched the first 4 seasons. I’ll finish the rest at some point. It’s good show but definitely not as good as it’s reputation.

Do you think an all time show gets better after 5 episodes?

What kind of question is this?

I don't care what anyone says. Season 1 is slow. Very slow. The style is cool but the actual story is very slow burn.

It ramps the frick up in mid season 2 and is in full swing season 3.

To me, Season 1 sets the stage and Season 2 is where it really hits its stride. I’d push through to at least mid Season 2 before giving up.

And I never mind slow shows. It’s just I got tired of the same old stuff and when the characters started to be a chore to watch is when I ended it. It’s one of my wife’s favorite shows so I’ll get back to it eventually.

I lost interest in 5 or 6 when they got into a real rise & repeat thing. By that point, you're already past a couple of season finales that had been written as series finales. Picked back up for the final season.

Does Mad Men get better

No, it’s boring as hell and very predictable. I watched the whole series last year at the beginning of quarantine and couldn’t figure out the big deal. The person who recommended it to me said it was an all time great show like Breaking Bad or The Wire. It’s not, it’s about a guy cheating on his wife and smoking all day. That’s the whole show.

The show was incredibly under-written. A lot of episodes just end with Don looking out a window and we get no insight into his character at all. You just have to infer what he’s feeling, and usually it’s nothing but “I love my family but I love getting drunk all day and cheating on my wife too. What to do?!”

It’s much like the sopranos, it’s built for the long haul. Eventually you aren’t as focused on the plot or cliffhangers and just want the people in your life. Mad Man was written by people that work on the sopranos so it makes sense they share a dark humor and vibe.

I love both shows. I can just watch random episodes of each because I just enjoy the characters

Most of responses are dumb and unhelpful. I knew coming in it wasn’t an action show.

Helpful? This thread wasnt looking for help. This was you telling us you didnt like the show.

What type of response could possibly have worked?

"Yeah dude. This show is universally revered and considered one of the best of all time but, yeah, the first 5 episodes are not only boring, but so excruciatingly boring that you have to seek council just to be motivated and assurances to continue onward."

quote:

I’m sure it is in fact a good tv show, but all of these responses basically implying that I didn’t love the first few episodes because I don’t have a refined enough taste are unhelpful and lazy.

I didnt say you didnt have a refined enough taste. I said the show wasnt your speed. Which is EXACTLY what you said.
