Per Forbes, the flop’s total budget before promotion costs swelled to $387.2 million. Worldwide, it grossed a pathetic $384 million. A safe calculation is that after the theaters take their cut, the studios receive 50 percent of the gross. In this case, that would be $192 million.

Once you add in promotion costs and subtract tax incentives… Forbes estimates a $134 million loss, which seems reasonable. Over the next decade or so, thanks to what’s known as “ancillary” — television licensing, home video, etc. — Dial of Destiny could creep into the black. Still, an Indiana Jones movie is supposed to guarantee hundreds of millions in profits, not a long slog toward breaking even.

quote:

To understand just what a failure Dial of Destiny is, here is the worldwide gross comparison when adjusted for inflation:

Raiders: $1.276 billion

Temple of Doom: $994 million

Last Crusade: $1.186 billion

Crystal Skull: $1.134 billion

Dial of Destiny: $384 million

Dial of Destiny not only came in last place, it is $610 million behind second-to-last place.

Didn't hear about this, but what did they do? Have him run the Germans off his lawn?

How did Crystal Skull make that much money? It was terrible. That's probably why they made the new one. They figured it couldn't be any worse so they thought they had a guaranteed payday.

Shocked.

Time and again - even the Star Wars movies when they can say they maybe eaked out some profit it still massively underperformed the profit it should have made while damaging the brand.

What about all of the fixed costs that Disney has associated with the movie like the salaries of executives, engineers, etc. The office space, computers etc. for those who did work to either creating or promoting the movie? What about the staff of DEI Nazis that oversaw the production. Funny to see the Disney lovers fall all over themselves to argue Disney didn't do that bad. Actual movie studios who don't have themeparks etc to fall back on go bankrupt whiffing on a movie like this. You just have to pay an extra $50 to enter the magic kingdom.

Crystal Skull was the comeback movie. I can understand why it made as much as it did despite not being great. I'm a fan and can't tell you anything about this last movie. I remember reading it was going to feature a woman taking over as Indy or something and I immediately checked out. Clearly I wasn't alone

Their money well will never run out and they know it. Going to take a lot more mega losses to change the course.

Yeah, I am sure the investors/producers/stock holders can't wait for TNT to put it in it's rotation so they can break even 10 years from now.

All of this was made because people were tricked into thinking it would be an Indiana Jones movie.

This is because people weren’t going to be tricked again:
