Temple of Dumb was simply a terrible movie. From Spielberg’s couch casting Kate Capshaw, to the annoying little kid, the gross out monkey brains scene and the horrible story that movie simply sucked.

I can’t disagree with this, but I still liked it pretty well. But I can still hear the horribly-annoying screams of that chick to this day.

I gave it a shot on a rainy day and it was just terrible and completely forgettable.

TOD gets a boost from a healthy amount of nastolgia.

It’s campy and fun and doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Crystal Skull was just dumb.

Agreed, but it’s a fun unserious romp that’s campy in the right ways.

Is pretty entertaining up until that chase scene in the jungle where Shia swings from branches with the monkeys. Everything after that is complete crap.

Has several problems:
1. Pacing is really bad. Some of the action sequences and chase scenes go on for so long that you start to forget why they’re doing it.

2. Phoebe was a bad casting. She really lacked the charisma for the role, but the writing did her few favors. They tended to tell, not show, the audience who she was, which made it harder to believe it. Her characterization was literally just the surface level description of Indiana Jones but make her a woman. This could have worked if done well, but it wasn’t.

3. I dislike the trend of taking old characters and making them broken and defeated at the start of the movie like all of their progress and growth in previous films was undone off screen.

I agree, that nostalgia is part of it, but really the second part of your post is more why i love it - it's fun and doesnt take itself too seriously. but somehow, while being silly at times, Harrison Ford plays Indy so straight that you almost HAVE to take it seriously. a perfect example is the infamous dinner scene with the monkey brains and the "snake surprise" - while that part of the scene is admittedly pretty stupid, the simultaneous dialogue between Indy, Capt Blumburtt, and the prime minister is great, even if it is just exposition.

It alwasy kind perplexes me when people shite talk it to the degree they do. Is it as good as Raiders or Crusade? No it isn't (IMO). But jsut because it isn't mega elite like those two doesn't mean it's pond scum either. I mean TOD gave us:

-AWesome dance number intro
-Flaming skewer through a chest
-short round
-secret tunnels
-hidden spiky death chamber
-mola ram and hearts being ripped out of chests
-runaway mine carts
-face off on the rickety bridge

I mean that's a great damn action flick right there. People can say it's too hokey but I mean it's a mid-80s action caper of course it's going to have some hokeyness to it.

Car crash bystander effect. Word of mouth on how bad it was led a wave of curiosity.... To see how bad it was.

well I think expectations are so different these days

it would be an insane proposal to make a fun, silly, campy prequel to an action movie.

People online would destroy it.

Agree it’s just more slapstick than Raiders, which even the humorous scenes still had a dark and brooding feel.
And the Cinematography is so well done, it really takes you there.
