It’s easily one of my top 10 favorites, and it’s better than Goodfellas. Period.

Would've been a more compelling film if it didn't portray the Natives as helpless pacifists.
Um, an entire sequence of the film is dedicated to showing the Pawnee attack the Sioux - presumably just to take land and dominate...

I mean, they did portray inter tribal warfare. The film is a "going native" story. Also, it is told from his point of view and he obviously bought into the culture of the tribe that he adopted/that adopted him. I don't think they could have gone too far in adding negative elements to the tribe without making him seem totally naïve.

Your broader point has validity. Hollywood went from "Indians all bad" to "white people bad" when neither was an accurate portrayal.

The movie that handled it pretty well was The Outlaw Josey Wales.

It was fantastic. Simply. I loved it and have never looked at it in a negative way

Not even sure why anyone would

Agreed.

It and Field of Dreams are definitely Costner's best works, IMHO.

And I like the extended version even more.
. The extended version explains why it was deserted and why the weirdo at the frontier town was so f’ed up. It was worthwhile.

Does it?

I guess I missed it getting shite... I've never thought of it as anything but a classic.

The only “shite” it gets is from people who make comparisons between it and Goodfellas like people compare Forrest Gump and Pulp Fiction.

Goodfellas and Wolves was more of a legitimate toss-up than Forrest Gump and Pulp Fiction. (By that I mean, the Oscar letdown of Goodfellas losing was more legitimate than Pulp Fiction losing in 1994.)

Dances With Wolves is a masterpiece and in my top five... However, it always made me laugh that Costner/Dunbar learned the Sioux language in a few months out there, but Costner couldn’t be bothered to use an English accent in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves after the first 15 minutes.

Sweeping, panoramic, breathtaking scenery and a comparable score alone made the movie great. Not sure why anyone would even try to compare it to Goodfellas. I wouldn’t have ever even put Goodfellas in the same ring as DWW.

Good, but not to the extent of the hype.

I think it’s a great movie. My only gripe with it is that it beat out one of my favorite movies of all time in Goodfellas. And it’s no Goodfellas.

Look, the film is going to forever be linked (perhaps negatively for a lot of people) to pretty much sweeping out Goodfellas at the 1990 Oscars.

It deserves shite for that forever. Maybe not on its own terms, but a milquetoast film beating what many people say is one of the ten greatest films ever made is somewhat justified.

And with Dances With Wolves general plot line, it’s fricking hollow compared to Princess Mononoke which has the same plot but is absolutely masterful and may be the greatest animated film ever made. So between those two, compared to them it should be shat upon. No problem if you watch it on Netflix with your girlfriend, but I think this lesser property has undermined two masterpieces.

I picture this:
“Cut! Ok, Kevin just use your own voice. The accent isn’t working.”

When Sean Connery appears on screen, we see how bad Costner really is.
He’s appealing but he’s not a good actor.

Yellowstone seems to be perfect for him.
