Look, the film is going to forever be linked (perhaps negatively for a lot of people) to pretty much sweeping out Goodfellas at the 1990 Oscars.

But because of that, if feels like the movie has kind of become the punchline to a joke...which it absolutely does not deserve.

Not saying it's better or worse than Goodfellas...just very different. But judged solely as a cimeatic feat, it's magnificent. There is just no other movie like it. Upon re-viewing it recently for the first time in probably 20 years, it's still stuck in my head. It's just an extraordinary film that both haunts you and hooks you. I can completely understand how it won so many awards and was such a phenomenon at the time.

There are extremely few films in which you are so emotionally invested in a set of characters by the end. Costner made one of the all time great Westerns and truly American films.

You can also thank Dances With Wolves for the likes of Unforgiven, Tombstone and slew of other Western greats released in the early-mid 90s. Without the success Costner and resurgence of the genre, those films don't get made.

It’s okay.

On a historical note, kinda interesting that Orion released back-to-back Best Picture winners (Wolves & Lambs) with Wolves making $400 million and Lambs making $200 million...and Orion STILL went bankrupt.

Edit: Orion even won Best Pictures with Amadeus and Platoon. They were like the proto Miramax. Somehow, they still managed to lose gobs of money on bad investments.

When I walked out of the theater upon first viewing I really felt I had just watched an extraordinary film. It just clicked. And I like the extended version even more.

Would've been a more compelling film if it didn't portray the Natives as helpless pacifists.

There was a concerted effort obviously to rebuke old Westerns and the antagonistic savage Indian but it went too far in neutering them.

Every time there is a thread about crying in a movie on here my go to is Two Socks getting shot by the soldiers. Heartbreaking that he doesn’t just run away

I will go ahead and not thank Costner's over-long, self-serious tripe for a western made by one of the most powerful directors in Hollywood, who'd been making westerns off and on for decades.

It’s top 3 for me.

John Barry’s score is quite frankly my favorite of all time. It’s quintessential when driving across the West, absolutely knocks it out of the park.

I always felt the same about the West as John Dunbar did, I live out here now I love it so much.

The Indian characters are classic, the scenarios they have when first meeting, the Buffalo hunt is an all time scene, the Pawnee attack is the best Indian vs Indian movie scene we have....it’s perfect in my opinion and the gold standard for capturing the awe of the frontier before it was gone.

Wind In His Hair at the end gets me every time

Wasn't Orion management made up of many former United Artist guys? If so, they were perhaps the greatest movie executives in modern history at picking great film projects while simultaeaniously being the worst businessmen in Hollywood.

Orion must have had some incredible bombs to go along with all those hits.

Yeah, I think the one-dimensional Noble Savage view is what's hurt the film's prestige over time. It was still a very popular perception from the 70s thru the 90s, but it seems dated now. The explosion in documentary making and amateur history study has helped people get away from the old Hippy ideal of the simple children of the forest sitting around passing the peace pipe until Americans came along w/ guns and lies.

Also, the theme of Dances has been recycled so many times now that it became a trope, through no fault of Costner's. That South Park "Dances With Smurfs" episode kind of put it on the nose.

I must respectfully disagree.

Although Wes Studi obviously doenst get the part of Magua without portraying the savage Pawnee.

Killed me. With the music, it's the best scene in the film. A perfect climactic send-off to their friend.
