Could a movie based on Tolkien's city of Gondolin be doable?

This thread is probably only useful for LOTR/tolkien nerds. We all know that a movie based on the silmarillion book is not possible because there are way too many different plots and the timespan is hundreds of years, but what about a movie based around the existence of and eventual destruction of the great hidden city of gondolin? This was personally my favorite story from the silmarilion, and it tells a tale of betrayal ultimately destroying one of the grandest cities in tolkien's world. The movie would have your basic enemy (the dark lord morgoth and his orc armies) and would be set in a dark time, much like lotr.

The biggest issue is it would require incredible amounts of backstory, probably.

OTOH, the siege of gondolin would be an amazing cinematic experience if done properly.

It would be hard to just focus on one story from the Sillmarilion because of how much backstory and buildup is needed. Then again, just about every story from the first age ends in tradegy, which may not sit well with viewers. I would love to see it though.

I'd love a Children of Huron movie. It's dark but it would make for a great movie. And you get Gondlin in there too.

Sadly, no. Too damned much back storytelling would be needed for an audience to be in any way invested with any of the characters.

The fall of gondolin on screen would be so incredible. Dragons, balrogs, the beast of gondolin, etc. It would be incredible if it could somehow be pulled off.

I dont think it would be the same box office success given the lack of general public knowledge about it compared to the Hobbit and LOTR. Also, the last 2 Hobbit movies kinda soured me on the prospect of more Tolkien movies. The Hobbit was an incredible book, but the movie adaptation was sub par compared to the masterpiece that was LOTR. So the big question is, was there something that made The Hobbit different, or was LOTR lightning in a bottle? Im leaning towards the latter

From what I have heard the Tolkien family will never cooperate with Hollywood again. From what I read, if accurate Hollywood used funny numbers on how much the movies made so they could pay the Tolkien family far less than what they were owed.

I absolutely love it but I don't see it happening, although I think someone could pull it off. Even Jackson could if he pre-planned for about 4 years like he did with LOTR. I don't think the Tolkien estate will ever let him touch one of their properties again though.

As has been said, while the Fall of Gondolin is an epic event, it would be extremely difficult to get the (back)story across in a reasonable movie context.

Maybe some of the Silmarillion stories (Children of Hurin and the Lay of Luthien, perhaps) could be done in a tv series on the scale of GoT, but that seems to be the extent of it to me.

Doable but wait a few years and dont let Jackson anywhere near it, the Hobbit movies were hard to watch.

Only if it can be unnecessarily turned into a trilogy.

I LOVED LOTR.

Watched the first two Hobbit movies and thought they were bad. Never even watched the third. That is the first trilogy I was invested in that I never even watched the 3rd movie. Just totally lost interest.

I'm sooo worn out of the orc chases/ fights... Orc focus in the Hobbit is what killed it for me...

Im glad Jackson got involved with LOTR and created some moments and some film that was truly epic and amazing. However, i choose to forget that the Hobbit films even exist.

Now that thats out of the way...ive always felt the Akallabeth (sp) would be the way to go for a film moving backwards into the Silmarillion from the 3rd Age.

You can start with a brief bit similar to the first LOTR film and show Morgoth being cast out into void, and see Sauron fleeing to Middle Earth.

Then you get the whole of Numenor to create. The sailing of their great fleets and mastery of the seas, building, art, etc....great lifespans, etc. Then they roll up on the shores of Middle Earth and how Sauron plays them. Plays weak. Plays the long game. Promises them secrets, and helps them grow greater. Ultimately driving them to their own destruction. And at the end of the film(s) setting it up so that Sauron is now a power to be reckoned with in his own right on Middle Earth.

I dont know....thats my take.
