Started Citizen Kane last night with my wife... My wife fell asleep almost instantly. I lasted about 30 minutes before I turned it off and went to bed.. didn't want to get too far and have to rewatch a bunch with my wife.

Seemed pretty slow, but I have heard it's the best movie ever. I like slower build movies that rely of well delivered lines (like There Will Be Blood or Glengarry Glen Ross).

Worth it to finish it? Or was it just groundbreaking for it's time?

I would say watch it but I did NOT like it.

The reason it's considered one of the greatest movies is because it did things in production that have never been done...kinda like MJ's "Thriller" video...its NOT even MJ's best video but it was innovative at the time...Thriller is considered the greatest video for that reason.

I'd say it's definitely worth finishing. If for no reason other than to see if you love it or hate it.

If you don't finish you're just going to turn on some forgettable reality show and you might as well see if you like the movie that is widely viewed as one of the greatest of all time as opposed to something run of the mil. That's how I'd look at it.

Watched it for the first time a few months ago and man I don't see the hype. I did get a kick out of the scene where Charles Kane takes all the socialites to a black tie pick nick in the Everglades during the summer. They made it look so ethereal, but those folks would have been boiling and all eaten up by mosquitoes.

It’s absolutely worth seeing once, if for no other reason than cultural literacy. If you’ve watched a lot of older films, I think you’ll understand why this movie gets the respect it does.

With that said, it’s not something that is eminently rewatchable like Casablanca.

I love Citizen Kane. It may not be the greatest movie ever (it's up there), but at the time & for a few years after, I can see why it was considered so.

It's not really a fun watch. More of an assignment.

It was considered the best film by critics for quite a while but a lot of the top critics have moved it a bit down the list now.

Sounds like you’d like it. I would recommend you finish it, I think you’ll be glad you did.

Understand it was a hit piece on Hearst. He went after Wells and really hurt his career.

Sort of like what Frank tried to do to Puzo.

Your ignorance of what’s on screen and how it was created is why you don’t enjoy it.
Listen with a commentary if possible. The number of invisible special effects is astounding.

I've seen it several times and I like it.

The "greatest movie ever" talk, IMO, is more about the technical filmmaking advancements in the making of the movie, but it's still good and worth finishing.

My feelings exactly. I'm glad I watched it but have no desire to see it again.

Birth of a Nation was more innovative.

Read up on the history of it, THEN watch it. There is so much to be missed if you don’t know about William Randolph Hearst and his beef with Welles, and especially if you don’t know how many intentional digs Welles took at him with the movie.

For instance: Rosebud

Such a critical word that the entire movie centers around. In the movie it turns out to be something important but innocuous; however, Welles used this, because he somehow found out that it was Hearst’s pet name for his lady’s special spot Hearst was furious

Nobody hurt Welles’ career more than Welles.

They chose it as the best picture, because its the Artistic and Intellectual thing to do. Old movies like Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, and Wizard of Oz are better movies that still hold up today as classics from that era.

It was ahead of its time with non-linear
story, creative cinematography and editing. A biography of William Randolph Hearst disguised as a parable using a fictional character…

It’s great moviemaking, but it’s not necessarily for everyone. It does deserve the praise, though.
