I believe the word you’re searching for is antihero.

TV/Movies seem to be rife with them over the past 25 or so years. I believe Tony Soprano set the standard.

My first thought too. Eastwood's character in "Unforgiven" is the epitome of hero/villain.

Also giving a nod to Brando's character in "On The Waterfront" In the beginning he's the patsy to get Joey Doyle up on the roof so the mob can rub him out for not being "D and D" then goes against the crooked union leader to break up their hold on the longshoremen working the docks.

After watching Samaritan on Prime, I'll say Joe. You go through 90% of the movie seeing him do things to help the kid, you always see him as the titular hero. In the climax, he reveals otherwise... he is Nemesis, not Samaritan.
