Think about it.

Scarlett O'Hara was more of a survivor than a villain.

Nancy Botwin.

Had this conversation with wife a few days ago when she was watching Weeds and said something about wishing she was more like her.

Dale Gribble sabotaged Hanks yard and killed the grass, only to redeem himself by saving Bobby's life. Sorry just watched that episode last night so this was timely.

Actually, there are several examples of Dale being both hero and villain

You ask an interesting question. I think the notion of being both is a trend in culture due to pluralism. Nobody is the good guy nor is anyone the bad guy. We are all just coming at it from our perspective. But literally there are 3 options for being both the hero and villain in a story. The hero falls and becomes the villain or vice versa. Or the character is both the hero and the villain at the same time. I see the character Dexter as this.

Earliest example I can remember, is probably the werewolf in the old monster movies. I seem to remember him stopping the vampire.

Vader did it in Return of the Jedi. Godzilla has been both, but I don't think in the same movie.

Game of Thrones has folks transitioning, but I don't know of any that were both in the same episode.

Sawyer had Charlie abduct Sun to get everyone scared so he could con Locke into getting access/ control of the guns for the group; he’s a conman and not a good dude until the later seasons

Still one of my favorite lost characters for sure

So, in movies and TV, what are the most memorable characters that were both a hero and villain.

Melisandre from GOT.

She convinced Stannis Baratheon to murder his only child, but later helped defend Winterfell against the White Walkers.

I think Michael Douglas as William Foster in Falling Down would qualify.

I think that you are describing the Vincent Price character in the film “last Man on Earth,” the first of three films based upon the book “I am Legend.”
